Overview: the Manager, Clinical Laboratory supervises laboratory staff, testing, and quality assurance in the Biochemical Genetics and Peroxisomal Diseases diagnostic laboratories. This position will be responsible for maintaining records (eg, quality control, quality assurance, equipment maintenance) to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. This staff member will perform a variety of laboratory diagnostic and research procedures for the identification and evaluation of inborn errors of metabolism according to established laboratory procedures as needed. The incumbent will ensure the maintenance of equipment necessary to conduct the laboratory's activities and to satisfy state and federal certification requirements. Responsibilities: 1. Manage technical and administrative staff working in the Kennedy Krieger Institute's Genetics Laboratories. This includes ensuring technical competency, completing performance appraisals, setting work schedules, assigning tasks, and monitoring and approving payroll records in the Kronos system. 2. Perform quality control and quality assurance procedures. Maintain related instrument and testing logbooks as required by state and federal laboratory licensing agencies. 3. Assist Laboratory Directors in preparation and maintenance of requirements for state and federal laboratory licensing agencies. 4. Organize and participate in laboratory proficiency testing. Maintain proficiency test records for review by Laboratory Directors. 5. Assist with administrative duties, as needed, including Laboratory Information System (LIS) data entry, faxing of patient reports, laboratory billing, and the completion of various transactions in the Kennedy Krieger Institute's Workspace system. 6. Perform data entry and analysis of laboratory tests as needed. 7. Supervise and perform, as needed, diagnostic laboratory procedures according to established policies and procedures. 8. Assist in the development and standardization of new analytical methods. 9. Prepare analytical standards and quality control materials as necessary. 10. Utilize and maintain the laboratory's gas chromatographs, mass spectrometers, and amino acid analyzer according to the manufacturer's or laboratory's specific procedures. Utilize, share, and maintain other standard laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, pH meters, balances, sonicators, ovens, evaporators, and incubators. Maintain records for laboratory equipment. 11. Follow established departmental and university policies for quality assurance, infection control, safety, and environmental protection. Keep updated safety policies for handling, storage, and disposal of biohazardous, infectious, and radioactive substances and execute all laboratory procedures in compliance with such policies. 12. Work as a team member of the research division of the Kennedy Krieger Institute and share in the maintenance of jointly used equipment and facilities. Qualifications: EDUCATION: Bachelor of Science or Arts degree is required. EXPERIENCE: Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in clinical laboratory setting required. Supervisory experience preferred. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and/or Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) experience preferred.
