The Firm serves both privately held and publicly registered companies, as well as nonprofit and social sector entities, high net worth individuals, private equity funds, and hedge funds, with a focus on middle-market companies and closely held family businesses.Marcum's Managed Accounting Services (MAS) Department is actively seeking a mission driven, client-facing Supervisor to join our growing team in our Washington, DC. MAS supports the accounting function for a variety of diverse clients, primarily in the nonprofit sector. This is a great opportunity for an experienced Senior Accountant/Supervisor from the public accounting industry or Controller from the private sector who is looking for challenging, highly rewarding work. The ideal candidate has demonstrated expertise with the monthly close process, preparation of financial statements, will possess a high aptitude for learning new systems and processes, and is comfortable interfacing with organizational leadership and Boards of Directors. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a deadline driven, fast-paced environment, and has experience training and mentoring staff accountants as well as managing engagement teams.Job Summary:The MAS Supervisor leads the engagement team, oversees the staff accountant on the engagement, and is primarily responsible for the month-end close process, preparing financial statements, and training and reviewing work of the staff accountant and reporting to the Manager. The Supervisor is the primary contact for the client and an integral role on the engagement team. The work of the Supervisor is performed in the Marcum offices but can involve travel to client sites.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:AccountingOversee the month-end and year-end closing process, including preparation of audit schedules, financial statements and notes to the financial statementsKeep engagement partner informed and updated on engagement progress, engagement issues, and team status and needsKnowledgeable on complex accounting issues and treatment, proficient in accounting researchResponsible for preparing monthly financial statements, including statement of financial position, statement of activities, statement of functional expenses, and analysis on changes in financial position and budget variancesReview reconciliations for significant balance sheet accounts and various other general ledger accounts, as needed; and review month-end closing entries including payroll, fringe, indirect allocations, investment allocations, and grant allocationsMaintain deep understanding of the accounting operations within each assigned clientProficient knowledge of the clients' accounting software packagesResponsible for recommending and enforcing the internal controls, policies, and procedures, established by the clientLead the engagement team in preparation for clients' audits as the main contact with external auditorsManage the preparation of our clients' 990 and tax forms and year end preparation of their 1099'sRecommend, design, and implement any necessary policy controls and procedures.Other duties may include, but are not limited to: budget preparation, review, modification, Grant reporting to private/federal funders, Drafting of Policies and Procedures, review and payment of client payables in third party software, client billing, drafting of engagement lettersSupervisory Responsibilities:Train, coach and mentor staff accountants Review and supervise Senior and Staff Accountants' monthly work, including journal entry and monthly reconciliation review, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in month end completionAssist in growth, development and training of staffManage administrative aspects of engagement such as drafting of engagement letters and engagement time budgetingParticipate in firm-wide or department-wide initiativesMinimum Qualifications (education, experience, certifications):A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration or other related field.CPA or CPA Candidate, MBA or MBA Candidate or candidate for other relevant certification.Supervisory experience required5+ years of Accounting experience in Public Accounting or at a Non-Profit organization preferredProficient with various accounting software programs including but not limited to QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Solomon and Great PlainsProficient in the use of Excel and other Microsoft Office applicationsAbility to conduct analytical reviews and exhibit an understanding of complex accounting theoryA deep understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)Strong problem solving and analytical skills and proactive initiativeProfessionalism and relationship building skillsStrong verbal and written and communication skills Strong time management skills and the ability to work in a matrixed environment Ability to keep up to date with industry trends and technology developments
