Duties

  • Process, fill and distribute outpatient prescriptions for non-scheduled federal legend drugs and medical devices, over-the-counter products and supply items
  • Distribute scheduled federal legend drugs; inpatient preparation and distribute unit dose medications, ward stock items and intravenous admixtures; stock management; operation, maintenance
  • Re-stock and troubleshoot automated dispensing equipment
  • Maintain good patient and customer relations
  • Prepare and maintain various logs, records and reports

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. (This is only applicable to current permanent VA Nationwide employees) and past, current, upcoming VHA Health Professional Trainees (HPT) graduates.)

Basic Requirements:
    United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. (COPY OF DIPLOMA/RESUME REQUIRED: If you do not submit copy of your diploma or the experience is not supported by your resume, your application will not be reviewed.) Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. (COPY OF CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: If you do not submit copy of your certification, your application will not be reviewed.) English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with the VA policy.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grandfathering Provision: All persons employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard (March 17, 2006) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and licensure/certification/registration that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation.

Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements of employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates.
    Creditable Experience: To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with the scope of pharmacy technician practice. Pharmacy technician experience must be documented on the application and verified in an employment reference, or through other independent means. Part-time experience as a pharmacy technician is credited according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a pharmacy technician would receive 1 week of full-time credit for each 2 weeks of half-time work. Experience (GS-06): One (1) year of experience at the next lower level (GS-05), i.e., performing duties of pharmacy technician at aa full performance level receiving little guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and procedures, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level (GS-05) i.e., ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment; knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique; knowledge of basic inventory procedures; knowledge of pharmacy information systems. (The experience must be supported by your resume to be creditable.) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
  • Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action
  • Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment
  • Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents
  • Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts
  • Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

Physical Requirements: Employees are typically expected to work forty hours per week (part-time employees will work less than fo11y hours per week). This may include nights, weekends and/or holidays as assigned. Principle duties require repetitive use of hands and fingers ( e.g., preparing JV admixtures, use of a computer keyboard, etc.). May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 44lbs.), including boxes, equipment, unit dose-cassettes, and JV solutions; stooping or kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers, etc.}; sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours). Normal ranges of hearing and vision are required to perform work and communicate effectively; must have the visual ability to distinguish between basic colors and shades of color. An ability to perform tasks requiring rapid mental and muscular coordination functions simultaneously is necessary. Must be physically capable of operating various types of equipment used for the job.
