Positions available in the Heavy Maintenance Group - Wastewater Collection Division: Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties required in the operation and preventive maintenance of medium and heavy equipment; including excavators, skid-steers, backhoes, single axle dump trucks, trailer-mounted pumps, rollers, and associated construction equipment. Tandem axle dump trucks, and tractor trailers may be used on occasion. Performs visual inspection of sewer manholes and lines, identifying defects and performing rehabilitation method when necessary. Acts as field lead for a team of two to eight employees directly responsible for performing and completing inspections and maintenance related activities, such as rehabilitation and repair, in an assigned geographic area. Uses laptops and asset management systems with County GIS to create, edit and complete work orders. In the absence of the Senior Maintenance Supervisor, this position may supervise subordinate staff and perform supervisory tasks. Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Senior Maintenance Supervisor, and/or Environmental Service Specialist.

Note: The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; plus three years of experience operating motorized equipment and/or semi-tractor trailers, as appropriate.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Class "B" commercial driver's license (CDL).
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a medical examination to the satisfaction of the employer prior to appointment.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or religious reasons will still be subject to the weekly testing requirement. Otherwise, vaccinated employees will complete the attestation online in the first day of employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Five years of work experience operating construction equipment.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience using computers systems related to Microsoft Office, GIS, and an asset management programs.
  • Participation in or completion of Manhole Assessment Certification Program (MACP) or Line Assessment Certification Program (LACP).
  • Possession of any of the following certifications:
    • Advanced Traffic Control,
    • Confined Space Entry,
    • A Virginia Flagger Certification.
  • Ability to read construction level designs and plan sets.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be capable of climbing or crouching in relatively confined areas. Must be able to lift/slide up to 90 pounds w/assistance. Must be able to pass a pre- employment physical and drug test. Work requires entering confined spaces with weight restriction of 310 pounds. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
