A large and complex park system encompassing over 24,000 acres of land, 420 parks, and an estimated 18 million park visitors. The Park Authority is excited to announce an exceptional career opportunity for a Golf Operations Assistant Director.

The Assistant Director works with the Director to lead the park system’s eight award winning golf courses, seven clubhouses, four driving ranges, events, merchandising, and lessons program. The Park Authority operates courses from par-three to championship length. All courses are professionally designed and carefully conditioned and maintained to provide the finest golfing in Northern Virginia. The golf system has won numerous local and national awards for design and operation; and hosted local, regional, and national level events. Must be an innovative, collaborative, highly experienced individual with a strong business acumen. Reporting to the Director of Golf Operations, the Assistant Director is responsible for assisting with the business development, coordination, and operations of the Park Authority’s golf facilities.

  • Leads a team of highly skilled and experienced staff.
  • Ensures adequate training and resources are available to meet operational objectives, conducts regular meetings, builds teams, mentors, and recognizes superior performance and motivates staff towards excellence.
  • Publicly represents the Park Authority as the face of the agency and presents relevant information at board, community, and homeowners association meetings and to staff.
  • Involved in setting the strategic direction by establishing operational objectives, service initiatives, revenue, and expense goals, and the short- and long-term capital investment strategy.
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and administering a sound business and organizational plan for the golf system which includes an operating budget, marketing plans, merchandising and revenue management.
  • This job is varied in nature and the incumbent must exercise considerable leadership and independent judgment. Business acumen is essential as well as effective skills in communication, political astuteness, team building, process improvement, supervision, managing and working in a diverse environment.

  • Develops long-range goals and strategic plans;
  • Prepares annual operating objectives and monitors progress toward these objectives;
  • Serves as a member of the division management team and interdivisional teams;
  • Reviews program budget expenditures and budget requests;
  • Prepares and submits a consolidated budget to the appropriate approving authority;
  • Develops management indicators for budget development and evaluation of organizational performance to goals;
  • Develops, implements and evaluates policies and procedures and implements or recommends changes;
  • Ensures that all data necessary for the functioning and management of the organization is stored and retrievable;
  • Supervises, evaluates and counsels subordinate personnel and provides for training and career development;
  • Analyzes programs’ use patterns and performance to goals, reports the results thereof and recommends improvements and changes;
  • Evaluates suggestions for new programs and improvements to existing programs;
  • Prepares periodic reports concerning organizational activities and accomplishments.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in recreation and park management or other pertinent related field;
Plus four years of experience in work related to parks or recreation, including responsible administrative/managerial experience, preferably in the applicable functional area.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Driver's License (Required)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or religious reasons will still be subject to the weekly testing requirement. Otherwise, vaccinated employees will complete the attestation online in the first day of employment.

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, child protective services registry check and driver's license check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:
Five years progressive leadership experience in the golf industry. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Detail oriented with the ability to handle multiple tasks. Demonstrated ability to run a professional, efficient, high quality, service-oriented operation. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Supervisory, coaching, and staff development experience. Strong business aptitude and passion for the golf business.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to spend extended periods of time standing and walking; ability to bend, twist, turn and stoop; physical dexterity to operate a computer; Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to traverse uneven during; ability to spend time outdoors during inclement weather. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
