Position Information
Arlington County Public Library is seeking a Communications and Marketing Manager to direct and manage all aspects of the Library's Communications and Marketing unit, including internal and external communications. This position will work closely with the Director and Deputy Director of the library as well as senior management in developing, m anaging, planning, organizing, and providing direction for a comprehensive strategic communications program for Arlington Public Library . The Communications and Marketing Manager will manage two Communication Specialists and one management intern.

The Communications and Marketing unit within Arlington Public Library serves as the conduit for information to and from internal and external stakeholders, including library patrons, library staff, media, the public, and other organizations seeking information about library services and activities. The goal of the comprehensive strategic communications program is to educate, inform, promote and/or support Arlington Public Library's programs, projects, policies, events, initiatives, and services.

Specific duties include:
  • Ensuring the work product of all staff assigned to the unit is in accordance with the comprehensive strategic communications program while identifying and bridging any gaps in reaching the Library staff, patrons, and the general public;
  • Development and implementing the Library's media relations program, including arranging information and distributing communications materials concerning library programs, projects, policies, events, initiatives, and services through all available media;
  • Identifying strategies to increase awareness of the Library and its services, including targeted strategies for Arlington residents who have not historically used the library;
  • Coordinating across the Library to ensure consistent and accurate information is disseminated to library staff and patrons;
  • Overseeing strategic development and maintenance of the Library brand;
  • Serving as the primary spokesperson, including but not limited to, representing the library in special events, public forums, media on-camera interviews, virtually, and over the phone on a wide range of library-related topics;
  • Overseeing the development of talking points and other materials to promote and support the Library programs, projects, policies, events, initiatives, and services;
  • Managing content on Arlington Public Library websites, including the primary homepage and newsroom, to include appearance and layout;
  • Ensuring 7 day a week coverage to coordinate and push out timely messaging regarding library closings, program cancellations, delays, or other updates related to weather, County technology issues, library catalog and account issues, or facility issues; and
  • Developing and overseeing internal messaging to staff on various topics of importance related to the daily operations of Arlington Public Library and wellness of staff prior to all patron and general public messaging.

Selection Criteria
Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Business/Public Administration, Journalism or related field plus considerable professional experience in one or more communications fields, such as marketing, public relations, speech writing, employee communications, journalism, or other related area.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following:
  • A Master's degree specializing in a relevant area is desirable;
  • Experience preparing news releases, talking points, oral and written reports, presentations, and other forms of communications;
  • Interpersonal skills to coordinate with and/or manage others, resolve complaints, maintain liaison and speak in public; and
  • Awareness of new and emerging public relations/communication methodologies.
