Duties

  • Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
  • Develop, apply, and validate computational methods for the prediction of the radiated noise from unsteady flow simulations.
  • Apply advanced simulation techniques on high-performance-computing resources to extend the physical understanding of noise generation mechanisms and apply concepts to reduce the radiated noise.
  • Evaluate comparisons of experimental and computational results and report the findings at technical conferences and in the scientific literature.
  • Serve as a technical expert and interface with other researchers in industry, universities, NASA, and other government agencies.
  • Formulate and conduct research in problem areas that are highly complex and of considerable scope working on problems that are often difficult to define and require novel approaches and sophisticated research techniques.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected. A review may be required to determine the appropriate grade level of the position and supplemental materials may be required from the selectee. Please keep this in mind when indicating the lowest grade you will accept.

To qualify for GS-12, you must have:
a) One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level performing research with high fidelity numerical simulations (i.e., computational fluid dynamics (CFD)) to analyze aerospace vehicles and components such as commercial/military aircraft, space transportation systems, launch vehicles; working with unsteady fluid dynamics (e.g., acoustic noise generation, separated flows); writing, reporting, and presenting results to include publications.
OR
b) Completed all requirements for a doctoral degree (i.e., Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field
OR
c) Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate education as described in A and B above

To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level conducting research, interpreting, and correlating results of high fidelity numerical simulations (i.e., computational fluid dynamics (CFD)) to analyze aerospace vehicles and components such as commercial/military aircraft, space transportation systems, launch vehicles; working with unsteady fluid dynamics and flow physics (e.g., acoustic noise generation, separated flows); writing, reporting, and presenting results to include publication in professional journals and/or national conferences.

Required college majors for applicants at the GS12 grade level qualifying on the basis of graduate education only

Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astrophysics, Electrical Engineering (except power), Electronics Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics. Other appropriate physical or computer science, mathematics or engineering fields are qualifying if the major includes or is supplemented by at least 12 semester hours (or the equivalent) of appropriate physical science or engineering courses including nine semester hours (or the equivalent) of physics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics or gas dynamics.

Education

You must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.
*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.
