PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONThe Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) develops and implements emerging technology, cancer biology expertise and research capabilities to accomplish NCI research objectives. The CRTP is an outward-facing, multi-disciplinary hub purposed to enable the external cancer research community and provides dedicated support to NCI's intramural Center for Cancer Research (CCR). The dedicated units provide expertise in electron microscopy, protein characterization, mass spectrometry, protein expression, optical microscopy, and genomics. These research efforts are an integral part of CCR at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR), where CRTP scientists work collaboratively with intramural NCI investigators to provide research technologies and expertise.KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIESWe are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Biological Image Analyst to join our scientific team working with the Imaging Mass Cytometry laboratory (IMC) laboratory funded by the NCI's Center for Strategic Scientific Initiatives (CSSI) at FNLCR. Our team works with several intramural and extramural research groups that are interested in employing IMC in their projects. In the IMC technology, we stain the fresh-frozen and FFPE tissue slides from the mice models and clinical specimens with up to 40 different metal-labeled antibodies and laser ablate these slides to achieve high-dimensional imaging data at subcellular resolution. Soon we are expanding our capabilities to process clinical samples in suspension using Helios, a "CyTOF" technology. We are also working with the multiple proteomics profiling of rare Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs) and immune cells to understand the mutational switchover, drug resistance, and metastatic spread of disease. The prospective Data Scientist I/II will work with our scientists and other research collaborators for analyzing their high dimensional imaging data using currently available statistical tools as well establish or develop novel tools using Python, R Programming, and MATLAB.Develop an extensive knowledge and perform high dimensional imaging data analysis related to the suspension CyTOF and imaging mass cytometryUnderstand and establish the multiplex proteomics data analysis pipelines developed by the other academic laboratories and from the published literature Implement algorithms and develop custom graphical model visualizations for imaging dataWork with our scientific collaborators to design and troubleshoot the customized analysis methods using Python, R programming, and/or MATLABInteract with coworkers and collaborators with different backgrounds and be flexible with the programming environmentsWork as a key internal resource for the training and support of data analysis for the collaborative projectsUse statistical and multivariate analysis to find trends in data and imagesDevelop an interactive training programs and author data analysis SOPsReport findings to supervisor and scientific collaboratorsAssist scientists and collaborators in authoring manuscripts for publicationBASIC QUALIFICATIONS This position may be filled with a Biological Image Analyst I/II commensurate with the selected candidates experience. To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:Possession of Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in a field of Biomedical Engineering/ Bioinformatics/ Data Science/ Computer Science/ Computational Biology or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for US equivalency Biological Image Analyst I - In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of 0-2 years of progressively responsible experience Biological Image Analyst II - In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experienceRelevant experience in an academic research laboratory or industry settingDemonstrated ability to perform statistical analysis on graphical and image-based dataCompetence with programming statistical based algorithms using language of choice (Python, R, MATLAB etc.)Ability to adapt existing algorithms to new and different scientific platformsAbility to perform multi-variate analysis (for example: clustering; singular value decomposition)Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearancePREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration: MS degree with relevant experience in multiplex imaging data analysisFamiliarity with biological images, file types, and expertise in programming languagesStrong written and oral communication skillsAbility to solve problems independently with minimal oversightExperience with data analysis for CyTOF data from Helios/Hyperion, MIBI or CODEX platformPrevious experience with histoCAT, Halo analysis tools is highly preferred
