Job Description

Our team develops and maintains Carta, The Washington Post's email sending and newsletter curation platform. The platform is responsible for the writing, editing, and sending newsletters as well as marketing emails and other email products for both internal and external use. The Carta team works closely with the newsroom and other internal departments to help produce, manage, and deliver products for the company.

As a member of the Carta team, you will help design, develop, and deploy portions of the platform, which involves email curation, editing, sending, and analytics. You will work closely with teams throughout The Washington Post and help find and implement solutions to assist the editorial and advertising workflow.

As a Creative Technologist, you would collaborate closely with our UX/Product Design team to strategize and design email and newsletter experiences. The goal of the Creative Technologist role is to inform and drive the strategy of both design and development throughout the end-to-end product process. Coding email templates would be a pillar of this role, but reaches deep into product design practices of analytics evaluation, UX metrics, and user experience reports to identify user insights and inform design/technical solutions for improving the reader experience for our newsletters and marketing emails.

Responsibilities
  • Research, architect, develop and maintain features and functionality for the Carta platform
  • Assist users with template development and expand the user interface to meet user needs
  • Work with the team to improve processes, streamline workflows, and improve efficiency for the development and deployment process
  • Work with product team to execute on project roadmap
  • Provide production support as part of a rotating on-call
  • Follow best practices for development and documentation to ensure maintainability of the platform
  • Inform and guide design through email platform capabilities and constraints
  • Leverage your creative and technical skills to inform design and email strategy
  • Evaluate email newsletter metrics and analytics to help increase user engagement and satisfaction
  • Work with design to test variants and iterations of designs to improve user engagement
  • Collaborate on user research, testing, and validation with design team members


Requirements
  • 3+ years of software development experience
  • 2 years design or frontend development/design experience
  • Strong proficiency with HTML/CSS
  • Familiarity with Javascript


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Node.js
  • Experience with HTML templating languages such as Nunjucks or Handlebars
  • Experience leveraging data, metrics, and user insights to drive design and technical solutions
