Duties

  • Operate gasoline-powered concrete mixer in order to complete the required tasks.
  • Perform necessary operator maintenance of equipment.
  • Install weight-handling gear such as cables, ropes, slings, and chains to move a variety of equipment.
  • Operate engineering equipment such as those with bull blades, four-in-one bucket loader, or drag pan in a construction debris landfill.
  • Utilize vehicles according to safety rules to prevent damage.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.

Screen Out Element: There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision (listed below).
  • Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Engineering Equipment Operator (MVO), WG-08 without more than normal supervision. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Selective Placement Factor: In addition to the Screen Out Element (above), you must also meet the Selective Placement Factor (listed below). Applicants will need to submit a copy of their licenses along with the application. Failure to attach licenses will result in an ineligible rating.
  • Selective Placement Factor: Incumbent must already possess (and be willing to maintain) a Class B CDL with/Hazmat endorsement for the WG-08 position. (To be considered for this position, you MUST submit a copy of your Class B CDL with/Hazmat endorsement with your application package).

Working Conditions The operator works in all types of weather in flat terrain and is exposed to serious injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning or the vehicle being involved in traffic accidents. Also, the operator is subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes form the motor and exhaust. Asphalt worker is subject to cuts, bruises, and is exposed to the danger of falls while working on moving equipment.

Physical Effort Heavy physical effort is used by the operator in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment, attachments, and vehicles. Considerable strain is caused by the constant: vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Because of the location of the controls and attachments, the operator frequently works in awkward or stained positions. Worker frequently lifts up to 40 pounds and occasionally lifts equipment weighing up to 80 pounds with assistance.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this position, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
