Duties

  • Serves as a subject matter expert in the application of genetics, genomics, metagenomics, and phylogenetics to the analysis of food-borne pathogens as it applies to regulatory activities across the agency.
  • Works effectively with others to successfully advance and complete the scientific study goals of the agency as they pertain to the genetics of foodborne pathogens.
  • Creates and interprets complex phylogenetic trees, and uses knowledge of systematics, phylogenetics, and population genetics to define the temporal dynamics and origin of outbreak strains.
  • Set up and maintain the computational software infrastructure to perform genomic, and metagenomic analysis work.

Qualifications

The position of Geneticist falls under the 0440 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-13, you must meet all requirements by 11:59 pm EST on 11/29/2021.

Basic Requirements
Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.

Minimum Qualifications
Specialized Experience. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
  • You must possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service that includes experience: applying genomics, metagenomics, and bioinformatics tools and theories to analyze and process sequencing data of bacterial pathogens; summarizing and interpreting genome data from experimental protocols and preparing definitive analyses.

FOREIGN EDUCATION
Applicants using part, or all of their education completed outside of the U.S. to meet the qualification requirements, must have their foreign education evaluated by an accredited organization to ensure that the foreign education is comparable to education received in accredited educational institutions in the U.S. We will only accept the completed foreign credential evaluation.
