Full Time

  • Occasional travel to accompany the transport patients in the National Capital Region.
  • Perform pulmonary diagnostic testing such as: spirometry, lung volumes, single breath diffusing capacity, cardio-pulmonary exercise, metabolic measurements, oxygen titration, 6 minute walk, bronchoscopy assistance, etc.
  • Use assessment and critical thinking skills to assess respiratory status of patients prior to respiratory procedures.
  • Select and check proper dosage and methods of administration of medications to patients.
  • Identify interactions of drugs to determine therapy effectiveness and any adverse reactions.
  • Take appropriate action in response to patient distress or medical emergency.
  • Recognize and report critical laboratory results immediately to physician.
  • Set up and operate complex diagnostic pulmonary equipment (including blood gas analyzers).
  • Document all procedures into an electronic medical record for physician interpretation.
  • Set up, clean, and monitors a variety of complex respiratory and diagnostic equipment such as volume ventilators for critical care patients.
  • Assess the cardiopulmonary condition of assigned patients using data acquired through physical examination and respiratory monitoring and diagnostic equipment.
  • On the basis of patient assessment and analysis of blood gas data, independently makes adjustments to ventilator settings in order to change the patient's ventilator status.
  • Determine the effectiveness and or need for change in the therapy being administered.
  • Record treatment, findings, and progress pertinent to patient care.
  • Assist physicians during special procedures and places, adjusts, and replaces endotracheal tubes; performs blood gas analysis and interpretation and makes recommendations, and changes based on results.
  • Provide in-service training to respiratory therapists and nursing staff on types of treatments given, various types of medications used, and the set up and operation of respiratory equipment including the necessary cleaning and safety precautions.
  • Present demonstrations and subsequently observes personnel during performance to correct faulty techniques and answer questions.
  • Assist in scheduling patients for pulmonary function testing and other administrative duties related to the pulmonary function laboratory and pulmonary clinic.
  • Responsible for ensuring appropriate preventive maintenance and quality assurance of pulmonary function testing equipment and procedures.


Conditions of Employment

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • You must undergo a specific initial background checks, investigation and periodic re-verification check of multiple agency records to obtain and maintain a suitable determination to occupy a position having regular contact with children.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service which includes: performing arterial blood gas draw and analysis; setting up, operating, and maintaining ventilator equipment; and administering nebulizer medication treatment.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).


Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Respiratory Therapy and/or Respiratory Care.


Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.

A Respiratory Therapist License is preferred, but not required.
