Duties

  • Serves as recreation assistant and maintains order and enforces policies, procedures, and safety rules for fitness center which serves a diverse customer market.
  • Receives, stores, and issues towels and a variety of recreational supplies and equipment. Ensures that issue slips are properly completed on all equipment issues.
  • Assists in the physical conditioning programs by demonstrating equipment, methods and procedures to be used, as well as proper safety techniques.
  • Collects fees, for services and resale merchandise.
  • Sets up and takes down equipment for sport programs and/or special events.

  • May be required to work an uncommon tour of duty to include working evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license may be required for the position.
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
  • Incumbent must be able to do moderate lift or carry (45 lbs.) short distances, and reach above the shoulders.
  • Incumbent must complete all mandatory training.
  • On as needed rotation bases employee will administer bi-annual fitness assessments for military person.
  • Performs basic physical assessment measurements to include height, weight, timed walk/run test, and muscular strength tests (timed crunches and push-ups).


Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, for Recreation Aid and Assistant Series 0189.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-04, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience include provide support and assistance to management in fitness centers by administering fitness and sports programs and special events/programs.

OR
EDUCATION:
Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.

OR
COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  • Basic knowledge of a standardized body of rules, procedures and operations related to one or more indoor/outdoor recreation functions in order to perform the required activities in a fitness and sports environment.
  • Basic knowledge of general office administrative and clerical procedures, and automation functions to support office operations such as answer telephone, maintain files/office forms, order supplies, operate a cash register, enter and retrieve data from a computer. A qualified typist is not required.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions, and communicate effectively orally and in writing with a diverse group of individuals, using a high degree of tact and diplomacy.
  • Knowledge of a full range of work processing functions and the ability to work independently with little need for direct supervision in completing the assignments involving a sequence of tasks or processes.
  • Skill in the use of automation software arid related equipment.
  • General knowledge of established safety standards and procedures.

  • PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

    VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
