Duties

The Hematologist/Oncologist can evaluate, diagnose, and provide treatment in an outpatient setting or in the form of inpatient consultative services to patients of all ages presenting with illnesses and disorders of the blood and blood-forming tissues and/or malignant tumors. This includes: performing and interpreting peripheral blood smears, bone marrow aspirations and biopsy, administration of chemotherapeutic agents and biological response modifiers through all therapeutic routes, including intrathecal chemotherapy, the management and care of indwelling venous access catheters, cell pheresis, and therapeutic phlebotomy. Privileges also include admission, work up, diagnosis, and provision of treatment for patients in the Acute Care setting.

General duties include, but are not limited to:

• The physician is responsible for providing consultation in Hematology-Oncology, both for diagnosis and treatment in the inpatient or outpatient settings.
• The physician is expected to share attending call responsibilities with other Hematology-Oncology specialists in covering some nights, weekend and holiday calls. The physician will round with the team of fellow(s) and medical student(s) in regards to inpatient settings.
• Clinical oversight is provided by the collaborating physician, section chief of Hematology-Oncology and the Chief of Medicine.
• The physician, as a member of the department, communicates with other healthcare providers to manage consultations and additional services, as required.
• Interventions such as thoracentesis, paracentesis, joint aspirations foley catheter placement, nasogastric tube placement as indicated.
• Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy
• Administration of chemotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapies to treat cancer via oral, intrathecal, intraperitoneal, intrapleural, and other routes.
• Manage and supervise therapeutic phlebotomy.
• Collaborate with midlevel providers and physician colleagues with clear communication and documentation.
• Performs the administrative components of patient care management, such as:
• Participate in the educational programs for the section personnel as well as the medical staff.
• Participate in monitoring the quality, safety and appropriateness of patient care, both at the Section and facility level. Miscellaneous activities of the Medical Service inclusive, but not limited to special projects that help fulfill and/or enhance the mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs as assigned by the Chief of Hematology/Oncology, Chief of Medicine, Chief of Staff and/or the CVHCS Executive Leadership.
• Attend relevant patient care conference. There are about 7 patient care conference. Attendance in minimum 6 will be required a month.
• Attend Hematology/Oncology team meetings.
• Demonstrate ethical conduct and serve as a positive role model to others at all levels of the organization.
• Participate in quality assurance programs and chart reviews.
• Attend Medicine Service monthly staff meetings and COS quarterly meetings as per bylaws.
• Complete medical records in accordance with Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff.
• Participate in Medical Staff committee assignments.
• Perform other duties assigned by the Chief of Medicine or his Associate.
• Participate in, and attend, CME activities and VA continuing educational activities.
• The section is multifaceted with multiple physician-scientists, clinician-investigators, and clinician-educators.
• The candidate will have a unique opportunity to be members of two cancer centers - McGuire Cancer Center (VA) and the Massey Cancer Center (VCU)
• The medical center also serves as a hub-site for Lung Cancer Precision Oncology program and is also one of the funded sites for Colorectal Cancer (CRC) Cell-Genomics Consortium (VA4C).

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Board Certified in Hematology/Oncology

NOTE: A preference will be given to those with a strong interest in Genitourinary or Gastrointestinal Cancers.
