Academic Advisor, Cyber Security Engineering The George Mason University Department of Cyber Security Engineering (CYSE), within the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC), invites applications for motivated, critical thinkers with outstanding communication and organizational skills for Academic Advisor positions. About the Position:Academic Advisors hired for these positions will work independently and collaboratively with the CYSE Undergraduate and Graduate Associate Chairs and with CEC departments and university-wide constituents. The Academic Advisors will report to the CYSE Undergraduate Associate Chair.Responsibilities:The CYSE Academic Advisor positions are responsible for academic advising for all current and prospective undergraduate and graduate students, and replies to general inquiries about undergraduate and graduate programs offered by the department. The incumbents will participate in facilitating students' education, decision-making and planning, represent the department in a professional manner, and will act as a resource regarding the university and department's rules and regulations while serving as trouble-shooters and problem solvers. These positions require strong customer-service orientation via email, telephone, and in-person, as well as strong interpersonal and presentation skills. There may be occasional work and recruitment activities needed that are outside of normal business hours that may be offsite, and/or remote.Undergraduate and Graduate AdvisingAdvise current undergraduate and graduate students in decision making and developing a plan of study consistent with students' interests, desires and abilities;Assist students with prerequisites, course selection, transfer courses, registration and overrides, career and/or educational goals, and general university rules and regulations;Coordinate processing of graduation applications; Ensure students meet departmental requirements toward degree progress; Assist students in establishing or clarifying appropriate educational and vocational goals;Assist students with problems of social or personal nature and assist in career decision making or making appropriate referrals;Communicate essential academic registration information;Act as a liaison in communicating students concerns, problems, and issues to the higher management level; andParticipate as a member of the CEC Undergraduate Committee. Undergraduate and Graduate Student AffairsProvide administrative support to students and faculty;Distribute information and assist in implementing and performing student support services tasks;Assist in coordination of efforts to organize departmental functions for students, including events such as orientation or faculty-student advising meetings;Participate in university wide programs and events related to undergraduate and graduate students such as admissions, orientation, advising, graduation, and other social and networking events;Assist and function as liaison between students, faculty, management, and administrative agents in understanding the programs, university rules and regulations;Assist and perform the oversight of operations related to student records, graduation, and student recruitment functions; andGenerate correspondence in communicating with students, faculty, and other administrators in writing and via e-mail, or through other communication means, in response to students and other constituent's inquiries in fostering student success as needed. Required Qualifications:A combination of education and experience in student recruitment, advising, communications, and admissions;Higher education advising experience;Outstanding communication skills;Demonstrated customer service experience;Demonstrated experience coordinating and planning events;Strong analytical skills;Strong organizational skills and a great attention to detail;Prior experience taking initiative and completing projects and/or assignments with minimal supervision;Prior experience writing and editing office correspondence;Excellent computer skills and willingness to learn new software; Prior experience with managing competing priorities effectively; andAbility to occasionally work outside of normal business hours that may be offsite, and/or remote.Preferred Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in a related field; andPrior admissions recruitment or related experience. About the Department: Established in 2019, the Cyber Security Engineering Department (first of its kind) is focused on academics and research for the cyber security engineering of integrated cyber-physical systems. The mission of the department is to develop proactive approach in engineering design of physical systems with cyber security incorporated from the beginning to the end of the system development life cycle. Cyber security engineering is an important quantitative methodology to be used in all industries to include, but not limited to, communication, transportation, energy, healthcare, infrastructure, finance, government (federal, state, and local), manufacturing and defense. The department prepares students with a foundation in cyber security engineering, and is most appropriate for students with a strong mathematics, science and computing background. A Force for Innovation in the Heart of Northern Virginia's Technology CorridorThe College of Engineering and Computing at George Mason University is comprised of the Volgenau School of Engineering and a new School of Computing.
