Job Description

The Washington Post has an opening for a managing editor who will oversee the National, Metro and Sports departments - teams whose areas of coverage will be key to The Post's emergence as the most important and authoritative news organization based in the United States.

The successful candidate will work closely with Executive Editor Sally Buzbee and other members of our top leadership team in charting goals for the newsroom and propelling it to even greater success. This managing editor will be instrumental in defining and executing the strategy that will govern how we cover the United States and how we structure and expand our teams to fulfill our ambitions.

We are seeking a leader who has extensive experience running coverage and managing journalists. Candidates' backgrounds should include most, if not all, of the following elements: overseeing large, complex staffs who work in a variety of formats; collaborating across departments to bring together storytelling disciplines in providing robust and accessible coverage on multiple platforms; and helping colleagues adapt and prosper amid change.

The strongest candidates will be able to present a record of conceiving and guiding high-impact accountability and investigative journalism. They also will have led or helped lead significant organizational growth.

The qualities needed for success in this role include superb news judgment, experience in motivating individuals and structuring teams, and a deep dedication to The Post's mission to scrutinize power in its varied manifestations. As with all our leadership positions, we seek individuals with highly developed communication skills, competitive zeal, a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, and an empathetic approach to management.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we return to normal operations, it will not be eligible for remote work.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

Candidates should upload a résumé and cover letter to our jobs portal by Dec. 3. All materials can be uploaded to the same field. The cover letter should be addressed to Executive Editor Sally Buzbee, to whom this position will report, and Senior Managing Editor Cameron Barr.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.
