Duties

The Chief Technologist Science Mission Directorate:

- Ensures technology investments strategies are aligned with SMD initiatives and in context of the science goal set in the decadal surveys.

- Articulates and champions technology needs among senior executives in the Agency.

- Interfaces with NASA Centers providing direct support to SMD.

- Serves as an advocate within SMD for technological innovation and new paradigms enabled by emerging technologies.

- Provides and supports investment strategies for SMD's technology portfolio.

- Serves as principal point of contact with the NASA Off ice of Technology, Policy, and Strategy (OTPS), the Office of the Chief Engineer (OCE), the Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD), and external government entities.

- Interfaces and interacts with the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate (ESDMD), the Space Operations Mission Directorate (SOMD), and representatives from the NASA Centers.

- Provides technical, programmatic, and budgetary guidance in the execution of new technology and commercialization activities of SMD.

- Collaborates and leverages technology investments with the Agency's mission directorates as well as other institutions and agencies, including the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) at the White House.

  • The individual selected will be required to file an 'Executive Branch Personnel Financial Disclosure Report (OGE-278) in accordance with the Ethics in Government Act of 1978.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation commensurate with the risk and sensitivity level of the position.
  • Successful completion of random drug screening may be required.
  • Must meet qualifications requirements by the closing date of this announcement.


Qualifications

Candidates must be a recognized subject matter expert with at least 1 year of directly related experience equivalent to the GS-15 level in managing and coordinating with complex external organizations and stakeholder interests regarding program and project planning and decision making for technology efforts and strategies, as well as program/project management experience with managing and overseeing the design, development, test-evaluation, and implementation of technology developments.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement. To be eligible, you must clearly state in your resume the following: degree, major and/or minor, and college/university.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science.

Additional information

The selectee receives a temporary promotion and serves for a period of 3 to 5 years. Upon conclusion of the temporary promotion, the selectee will then return to an appropriate position at a grade level no lower than the grade previously held. This temporary promotion may be converted to a permanent appointment without further competition. This temporary promotion may be terminated at any time.
