Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking an editor to run its America desk, which covers the biggest breaking news stories around the nation while probing the cultural and political currents that shape American life.

The America editor is responsible for beats spread across the country, covering race and identity, demographics and multiculturalism, and state politics while managing a team of nearly 20. We are looking for someone with the skills to mobilize the team when there is major national news, an instinct for accountability journalism and the vision to conceive and execute revelatory enterprise. We also want someone who can help shape The Post's efforts to expand our presence across the country.

The ideal candidate will excel at communication, develop ambitious projects and collaborate across the newsroom, particularly with visual journalists. The ability to prioritize the best ideas and develop them to their fullest potential is essential.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations, it will not be eligible for remote work.

Candidates should upload a résumé, cover letter and three clips (as PDFs) to our jobs portal by Dec. 1. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. The cover letter should be addressed to National Editor Steven Ginsberg and Managing Editors Tracy Grant and Krissah Thompson.
