Arlington County is seeking Relief Workers to supervise and assist in the delivery of afterschool and residential adolescent programs operated by the Court Services Unit of Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. Services focus on developing life skills needed for success at home, in school and in the community. These programs provide a safe, structured, and consistent environment that includes daily homework support, psycho-educational groups, social skills building, and peer support groups.

Relief staff provide direct services to clients and supplement case coverage of full-time counselors, serving a culturally and ethnically diverse population, including clients and parents who speak Spanish and have difficulty communicating in English.

The Girls' Outreach Program is an after-school program for girls ages 12 to 16 that provides counseling and support to girls at low-to-moderate social, emotional and academic needs, most of whom participate in the program voluntarily.

The Andrew B. Ferrari Argus House Group Home, a residential program boys ages 13 to 17 that provides engaged, active supervision to moderate-to-high-risk male juveniles. This program also provides a self sufficiency/independent living track for males age 17 to 20.

Specific duties for both positions include:

  • Preparing written documentation such as incident reports, observation notes, and/or information for other staff;
  • Actively leading and participating in recreational and group activities to ensure client participation and compliance;
  • Interacting with at-risk youth, family members and associated professionals;
  • Supporting the behavior management plan set forth by full-time staff;
  • Leading structured and "down time" activities according to program schedule;
  • Conducting group meetings to process issues, confront behaviors; and express feelings;
  • Preparing and supervising meals;
  • Leading and supervising chores;
  • Supervising and providing homework support to clients during study hall;
  • Conducting searches of residents' belongings and conducting urine drug screenings;
  • Transportation of clients to outside activities including school, mental health appointments, and community service activities; and
  • Leading Recreational, Community Service, and other outside activities according the the daily schedule and the weekend plans.
  • Safe operation of a 15 passenger Arlington County Van according to County standards.
The ideal candidates for both positions must have experience working in a diverse community setting and be skilled at maintaining a positive rapport while serving as a caring adult role model and authority figure.

Selection Criteria
Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent plus some experience providing direct human services to adolescents in a community-based setting.

Substitution: College coursework in a human services related field may substitute for up to one year of experience.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following qualifications:

1) A college degree in Social Work, Criminal Justice, Psychology or a closely related field;
2) Certification in First Aid/CPR, Handle with Care, Food Service and Virginia Medication Aide;
3) Experience working in a multilingual and multicultural environment; and/or
4) Bilingual capability.

Special Requirements

  • A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted and candidates will be required to provide police clearance records upon final consideration for employment.
  • Clearance by the Virginia Department of Social Services Child Protective Services Central Registry is required.
  • The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence.
  • Applicants must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
  • Employees must have or obtain certifications in CPR, First Aid, Handle with Care, Medication Administration, and Food Service.
