Senior Risk Associate, Risk Management

The Capital Risk Oversight team is seeking a motivated candidate for a Senior Risk Associate, Risk Management position. Capital Risk Oversight is a second line of defense function responsible for oversight of the company's capital measurement and management. This includes internal capital requirements (economic capital), stress testing (CCAR and other resilience analysis), regulatory requirements (Basel), capital allocation, overall capital frameworks, and regulatory compliance.

The second line of defense is both an expert advisor to the first line and an effective challenger of first line risk activities. The successful candidate will help to influence the company's capital approaches and processes, and will build strong partnerships with the first line of defense capital teams and other internal independent review and challenge organizations (e.g., Enterprise Risk Management, Market and Liquidity Risk, Model Risk, and Internal Audit). This individual must be able to effectively communicate and influence partners across the company and across multiple levels of the organization.

Risk Associates at Capital One are highly motivated risk and process management professionals with excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills. These skills allow the Risk Manager to gain insights, and act as a change agent to influence their partner organizations.

As Capital One evolves to meet the ever-changing technology landscape, so do our risk managers. A successful risk manager operates from a foundation of knowledge about the Line of Business with whom they are working, laws/regulations, processes and associated controls, and good risk management practices. They are forward thinking, quick to adapt, and technologically adept. Risk Managers have a high level of exposure across lines of business and have the opportunity to create and implement innovative solutions to appropriately manage risks.

The ideal candidate will be a highly-motivated risk or process management professional with excellent process improvement and communication skills. The candidate will be detail-oriented and results focused, and will have a proven record of problem solving and collaborating with others.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the team's "Risk Lead" by liaising with our partner organizations, such as Enterprise Risk Management, to deliver against enterprise risk expectations
  • Serve as the team's compliance subject matter expert, owning the relationship with Corporate Compliance, executing against Compliance's "minimum standards", and maintaining an understanding of industry best practices, industry/regulatory trends, and supervisory guidance with respect to capital measurement and management
  • Own, maintain, and execute the team's change management (e.g. new products, treasury new initiatives process, etc.) and issue management framework
  • Identify and govern the risk and control data within our risk data infrastructure which includes:
    • identifying opportunities to further improve or design dashboards, tools, and processes related to data governance;
    • proposing enhancements to ensure our risk and control data quality is well-managed within our applications;
    • facilitating discussions with our stakeholders to improve the overall health of our risk/control environment
  • Provide support in ensuring the Capital Risk Oversight Review and Challenge framework is implemented appropriately, interacting with and influencing a wide range of stakeholder groups
  • Evaluating design and operating effectiveness of controls, writing control assessments, and developing recommendations to partner teams for improving internal controls
  • Help manage the "in-cycle" CCAR review and challenge process (e.g. evaluating first line documentation against CapRO's review and challenge requirements, processing challenges through the system of record, etc.)
  • Design and manage monitoring plans, oversight, and compliance assessments as part of the Company's overall Risk management framework, ensuring Compliance, Audit and Regulatory requirements are being met
  • Lead the creation of various presentation materials for diverse stakeholders and governance committees
  • Help develop communications to senior management, the Board, regulators, and auditors
  • Support the execution of challenges related to capital measurement and management processes, including forecasting methodologies, assumptions/inputs, governance, results, and business decisions
  • Champion ideas related to process automation and application of relevant/emerging technologies to the company's stress testing and risk management processes

The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Strong process management and execution skills with commitment to detail
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Proficiency in understanding of financial institutions, bank balance sheet and profit and loss, capital concepts and capital's impact on business decision-making and risk management
  • Experience in Finance or Risk Management or similar role at a regulated Financial Institution or Consulting firm
  • Experience with design and implementation of risk governance frameworks
  • Proficiency in evaluating internal controls and internal control frameworks
  • Problem solving and innovative thinking skills
  • Ability to collaborate, build positive relationships, and exert influence without direct authority
  • Ability to apply strong judgment in areas of ambiguity
  • Knowledge of/aptitude with technologies such as Python, SQL and R
