Network and Security Engineer

George Mason University's Information Technology Services (ITS), located on the Fairfax, Va., campus, invites applications for a Network and Security Engineer position within the Network & Security Engineering team. About the Position:

The successful applicant will be a key member of a technical team that designs, implements and maintains the Mason's network in a fast-paced, multi-campus environment.

Assigned tasks will include project management, network and Wi-Fi design, maintenance and troubleshooting of the Mason Date Network. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining network documentation per department and commonwealth of Virginia information technology (IT) security guidelines.

Responsibilities:

The Network Engineer will report to the Manager of Network Engineering and be a member of the engineering team working on design, implementation, and documentation of network and security infrastructure and Wi-Fi networks. Applicants should have a good understanding of current network and information Wi-Fi concepts, technologies, and best practices; and will be able to explain these clearly to both technical and nontechnical audiences. A strong working knowledge of networking best practices and previous project management in a higher education environment is preferred. A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering or telecommunications, or the equivalent combination of education and work experience, is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of data and Wi-Fi networking, telecommunications, and transmission technologies including network architectures, topologies, protocols, devices and interfaces;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of LAN physical transmission media, Wi-Fi networks, Ethernet and IP;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of WAN physical transmission media and Data Link technologies;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IP routing and the operation of interior gateway routing (IGP) protocols; demonstrated knowledge of IP routing protocol details and BGP (border gateway protocols);
  • Experience installing and configuring routers and Ethernet switches; demonstrated ability to diagnose, resolve, and document communications problems related to network hardware;
  • Extensive, successful experience interacting with both coworkers and customers, resulting in high-quality customer support; hands-on experience working with Linux or other UNIX variants;
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting Microsoft Windows desktop operating systems and applications;
  • Hands-on experience with Cisco or Enterasys equipment;
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills; and
  • Must be eligible to work in secure computing environments including International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Programming experience with at least one high-level language;
  • Hands-on experience working with networks using Palo Alto, Cisco, Cisco Wi-Fi controller and AP's and VPN (virtual private network) solutions;
  • Understanding of systems analysis and engineering techniques;
  • Knowledge of state procurement policies and procedures;
  • Experience with Magic Ticket system; industry certification at the associate-level or higher (e.g., Cisco, Wi-Fi or Palo Alto); and
  • Experience documenting ongoing projects, testing procedures, and troubleshooting methods.
