Job Announcement

Works as part of the Environment and Development Review Branch (EDRB) to perform routine to complex technical and paraprofessional work, and directly supports the Planning Division’s environment and development review initiatives and assignments.

The following functions are part of the Environment and Development Review Branch (EDRB) in the Planning Division (PD):
  • Supports environmental and land use review for pre-application meetings and Comprehensive Plan Amendments, as requested.
  • Conducts environmental and land use analysis for non - complex site and development proposals for conformance with Comprehensive Plan policies and guidance.
  • Participates in planner of the day duties.
  • Research responses to inquiries from the public and other departments.
  • Coordinates requests and/or performs environmental and land use review for non - complex interjurisdictional reviews, VDOT Right-of Way abandonment proposal, NEPA and DEQ Environmental impact review as assigned.
  • Supports committee liaisons such as Agricultural and Forestal District and Wetlands Board with meeting minutes, which may require work during evening hours.
  • Provides technical assistance to EDRB as assigned.
  • Collects, tabulates and charts data for assigned projects.
  • Conducts field or site visits to gather additional information for assigned projects.
  • Analyzes data and helps planners with information for written reports, special studies and project presentations, etc.
  • Works with GIS and maps to prepare graphics and layouts for reports, assigned special projects.
  • Research past information/files for the subject properties and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains EDRB case log assignment and tracking database; creates case files and distributes development plans to various staff members; updates pre-staffing and staffing lists with case assignments; provides annual budget information on the number and type of work products within EDRB; additional special projects as assigned.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to: high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus two years of non-professional planning or zoning related work, as defined by the area to which assigned.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience in a public planning office setting working with more senior planners and the Comprehensive Plan, GIS mapping, and drafting short review memoranda; BA degree in planning or related field preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position is primarily sedentary. However, employee may be required to do some walking; standing, bending and carrying of items under 15 pounds in weight. Work assignments will also require that the employee make site visits and inspections. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
