Job Announcement

Works as part of the Sign Permits, Zoning Permits Section, Zoning Administration Division, Department of Planning & Development. With minimal supervision and subject to timeframes, reviews and processes sign permit applications using the County’s PLUS system and works with applicants to correct application deficiencies. Reviews and processes noise waiver requests in coordination with local communities and elected officials. Provides verbal and written responses to questions regarding the Zoning Ordinance, as received from the public, other county and/or state agencies, or elected officials. Conducts zoning inspections and writes inspection reports at the request of county staff. Reads and interprets technical documents, such as sign permit graphics, site plans, subdivision plans, and survey plats. Serves as a zoning resource planner on a rotating basis, answering questions from the public. Provides review comments to other planners within the agency regarding proposed comprehensive sign plans, photometric plans, special permits, special exceptions, noise studies, or other assignments involving land use planning, zoning, environmental planning, public facilities, and/or information technology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from an accredited, four-year college or university in a planning-related field.

BRIDGE CLASS EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Four years of increasingly complex technical experience in the assigned functional area, comparable to experience at the Planning Technician II, or higher, level. This class can serve as a bridge class enabling individuals who do not meet the educational or professional experience standards listed above to qualify for this class by possessing four years of increasingly complex technical experience in the assigned functional area, comparable to experience at the Planning Technician II, or higher, level. The purpose of this bridge class is to promote upward mobility within the Fairfax County workforce. However, persons qualifying for this class on the basis of their technical experience may not substitute this technical experience for education, or for professional experience, in order to qualify for other employment opportunities

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Seeking individual with knowledge of the practices of planning and zoning, and professional experience in the review and issuance of planning, zoning, building, and/or related permits. Must be an excellent communicator, with an ability to clearly communicate information orally or in writing to members of the public and other professional staff. Must possess strong interpersonal and public relations skills to work effectively with various staff members in a team setting, citizens and other customers. Experience using a personal computer, word processing applications, printing and scanning equipment and Geographical Information System (GIS) based programs or related permitting review and/or government software.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position is primarily sedentary. However, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending and carrying of items up to 10 pounds in weight. Work requires the ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment and make occasional site visits. Ability to drive a vehicle to sites in order to perform field inspections. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
