The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking multiple part-time, temporary Park Naturalist Aides to provide nature interpretation and nature center services at the Long Branch and Gulf Branch Nature Centers. The nature centers are the heart of our park system, and their mission is to increase understanding and love for our parks. As a Park Naturalist Aide, you will promote conservation and stewardship of Arlington's natural resources and the environment. This position is also responsible for operating the nature centers, assisting in nature programming for a variety of audiences around the County, husbandry of the nature center animal collection and maintenance of the outdoor gardens and trails.

Specific duties:

  • Providing excellent customer service and safety and security of the nature center facilities;
  • Researching, designing, presenting, and evaluating interpretive programs covering a wide range of natural history topics for a diverse audience;
  • Maintaining a live animal collection;
  • Coordinating and overseeing the work of volunteers;
  • Helping with special community outreach programs that focus on conservation and stewardship;
  • Helping to design and construct interpretive exhibits;
  • Maintaining native plant gardens; and
  • Performing some administrative tasks.

Selection Criteria
Minimum:

  • High school diploma/equivalent; and
  • Six (6) months experience with interpretation, environmental education, or natural history in museum, parks, nature centers, or a related environment.
Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with a Bachelor's degree in teaching, environmental sciences, or a related field and experience in one or more of the following:

  • Working with toddlers and/or young children;
  • Working with plants and wildlife common to the mid-Atlantic region;
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish);
  • Design and presentation of nature programs; and
  • Animal care.

Special Requirements

A pre-employment background check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Employee may be required to obtain and maintain a CPR, First Aid and/or AED certification as part of this position.

Applicants must have the ability to work outside in all weather conditions, and be able to stand or walk for extended periods of time, including lifting and carrying heavy objects such as: tables, chairs, plants, hoses, etc.
