The University of Maryland’s Office of Principal Gifts seeks an experienced, innovative and strategic Director of Development to support the university’s robust principal gifts fundraising efforts. Principal Gifts to universities are transformative and create new projects and programs. The Office of Principal Gifts is responsible for managing all of the President’s and Vice President of University Relation’s prospects. The Director of Development will be responsible for creating a viable portfolio of prospects by identifying, cultivating and soliciting new principal gift prospects who have giving capacities of one million dollars or more. 
 

The Director of Development will be responsible for overseeing the strategic direction and implementation of the newly created advisory council to the president.  They will be working directly with the President, Vice President of University Relations, Provost and the Executive Director of Principal Gifts to develop all relevant meeting agendas, identify and implement program details such as speakers for various topics, meeting protocols, and all operations for the advisory council to become a viable volunteer committee for the president.  

 

In addition, the Director will be responsible for developing ongoing engagement strategies for all members of the advisory council, this includes developing key cultivation activities for members of the council, fundraising strategies and stewardship plans.  As a member of the principal gifts team, the Director is expected to be an active participant in events and programs related to principal gifts, university relations development meetings, activities and various other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Principal Gifts.


The Director should demonstrate the ability to work in a collaborative environment. They should also have a general knowledge of fundraising principles and related experience working with high level administration, volunteers and other high-level participants who from time to time will be engaged with the council.

Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
Bachelor’s degree required.
 
Experience:
Candidates must have at least six years of related development experience, as well as experience raising six and seven-figure gifts. Experience building relationships with high-level volunteers, donors, and administrators required.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

 

  • Ability to exercise a high degree of independence in performing job duties.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across campus, including with development colleagues, deans, senior administrators and support staff.
  • Ability to represent the university in a professional manner at all times.
