As a Senior Statistician you will join an internationally respected, highly collaborative, multidisciplinary team. The most senior team members are authors of cutting edge research papers in survey sampling and methodology. They are leaders in professional associations such as the ASA, AAPOR and ISI. You will be a senior leader, directing
survey design and estimation projects, conducting and guiding statistical research and statistical analyses, integrating data science, and mentoring professional staff. You will be expected to work across research domains (including public health, behavioral health, education, social policy, economics, and transportation) to conduct and oversee statistical analyses. As a leader in the field, you will support staff in a learning environment, and promote continuing education as well as encourage presentations at conferences. A reputation in the field built on a strong publications record is desired. As a senior statistician, you will be responsible for overseeing staff who develop sample designs, sampling frames, imputation methods, weighting schemes and variance estimation methods for a wide variety of studies; developing innovative approaches to combine survey and non-survey data; mentoring junior staff; and collaborating with other practice areas in project development.

Major Responsibilities:

Technical Expertise
  • Thorough knowledge of design-based and model-based statistical principles and methods, and ability to apply them in innovative and creative ways;
  • Ability to develop sample designs in both standard and non-standard settings; oversee construction of appropriate sample frames and selection of samples; develop weighting, nonresponse adjustment and imputation strategies; create and implement methods for estimation of sampling and non-sampling errors as appropriate;
  • Work at the interface between survey statistics and data science, including the ability to combine and analyze multiple survey and non-survey data sources to answer client analytic questions;
  • Conceptualize scientific and policy research questions into statistical frameworks and models;
  • Ability to collaborate with experts in other areas of statistics and with non-statisticians as part of interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.

Project Execution and Quality
  • Create innovative statistical solutions to address client analytic and research goals at the project design and implementation stages.
  • Communicate with clients to clarify objectives and ensure the project plan will efficiently and effectively meet them.
  • Participate in and lead client meetings and presentations to convey complex statistical ideas.
  • Oversee the delivery of client commitments, ensure effective program and project quality review processes, and drive a proactive customer satisfaction culture that consistently achieves the highest client ratings.
  • Work with Project Directors and Project Managers to conduct project reviews that maintain statistical rigor and validity, high performance standards and quality of work;

Business Strategy
  • Lead, manage, and grow relationships with project clients.
  • Lead statistical aspects of proposal efforts and work collaboratively with subject-matter experts as part of proposal development teams.
  • Develop and promote thought leadership that enhances Westat's visibility through publications and conference presentations and further strengthens Westat's reputation for statistical excellence.
  • Provide statistical leadership in the design and execution of survey efforts.
  • Work with staff, to mentor, guide, educate and grow their knowledge base.
  • Collaborate across Westat to bring the full range of corporate capabilities to bear in the conduct of cutting-edge research and the development and expansion of technical capacity.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Statistics or related field with course work in survey statistics, or a Ph.D. in a quantitative field plus equivalent work experience is survey statistics.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience related to survey statistics.
