Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking an experienced newsroom leader to plan and direct coverage of elections.

This is a critical new role at the center of The Post's mission to provide our growing audience with the smartest, fastest and most compelling election coverage anywhere. The Director of Elections will be empowered to convene teams from across the newsroom, product and engineering to plan and execute comprehensive coverage. Responsibilities include driving robust and innovative live coverage plans across all platforms; ensuring election results and analysis are displayed in smart and audience-friendly ways that help users track and understand the state of the races; engaging our vast data resources to provide insights to readers and reporters in real time; and elevating election coverage across all platforms that reflects consistent Post quality and standards.

This role offers an opportunity to have a high-level impact on a core coverage area and help make The Post the premier destination for readers who seek expert news and analysis. The director will be part of the Politics team but will be responsible for overseeing presentation of local, state, national and international elections, including primary and general election results. The role reflects the size and complexity of The Post's digital newsroom operating, in a sense, as a conductor of a journalistic orchestra that comprises National, Local, Foreign, Graphics, Photo, Data, Polling, News and Product Design, Video, Audio, Homepage, Apps, Audience, Engineering and Product.

The ideal candidate is someone who combines a love of politics and elections with a collaborative and innovative spirit and a demonstrated ability to work across varied teams and manage large and complex projects on a strategic and tactical level. This person should have experience conceiving election coverage and digital strategies, editing a variety of story formats, and a track record of leading innovative and creative teams.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations, it will not be eligible for remote work.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

Candidates should upload a résumé, cover letter and three clips to our jobs portal by Nov. 26. Cover letters should be addressed to Senior Politics Editor Peter Wallsten, National Editor Steven Ginsberg, and Managing Editors Kat Downs Mulder, Krissah Thompson and Tracy Grant. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field.
