Web Designer / Developer George Mason University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) seeks a full-time Web Designer / Developer. The ideal candidate will be passionate about reaching web site visitors with designs that are attractive, intuitive, responsive, and accessible. They will have opinions about fonts, frameworks, standards, and style, and they will enjoy working with a small and motivated team. Responsibilities: CHSS is one of the largest academic units at George Mason University, with more than 700 faculty and staff, and an expansive range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary degree programs. Its 20 departments and programs offer a great diversity of academic disciplines, and all benefit from a web presence driven by the college's content management system. The Web Designer / Developer is responsible for all aspects of design and user interface for both the public-facing and the administrative sides of the college's web applications, including this content management system, which runs over 70 sites representing the college's departments, programs, and centers. The designer works with a team of programmers but is also hands-on with the places where design touches coding. This person leads the full design process, from discovery through development and integration with the code, and assures that the code meets current standards for best practices and accessibility. The designer provides support to all applications maintained by the CHSS IT team, including the CHSS wCMS, EnrollChat, and others. In collaboration with the CHSS IT team, the Web Designer will maintain, enhance, support, and document the design and accessibility of applications developed by the team. The designer works collaboratively within the team to plan and prioritize development and shape the technical direction of projects. The designer interacts directly with university clients to determine requirements, diagnose problems, train users, provide support, and ensure the successful ongoing delivery of well-designed, usable services. Position responsibilities will also include project management. This person will stay up to date on industry trends to provide technical leadership for incorporating the latest tools, technologies, and approaches to the team's practices. Required Qualifications:Web design portfolio;Fluency in and strong opinions about CSS frameworks;An agile, pragmatic approach to design;Comfort working directly with clients on support, training, and needs analysis; andDemonstrable experience designing modern, responsive, accessible websites.Preferred Qualifications:Experience developing with Ruby and Rails;Experience working with PHP;Experience conducting user training classes; andProject management experience.
