AARP's Policy, Research and International Affairs (PRI) leads the development and communication of AARP's public policies and, research and insights on the issues that matter to people 50-plus.

The team member in this role will conceptualize, develop, and conduct primary and secondary research to develop insights that shape policies, advocacy positions, business decisions/strategies and product or program development. Evaluates programs and business priorities to identify improvements and to measure outcomes. Collaborates with management to identify opportunities to streamline consumer insights processes and develop new procedures that support the business unit/department.

Responsibilities

  • Advises clients, stakeholders, and senior management on all phases of research; manages complex and conflicting relationships among multiple stakeholders; represents Association's research with external audiences including the media, legislators, and other organizations.
  • Manages and collaborates on a major research portfolio and synthesizes the complex array of data into clear, actionable insights; leads and collaborates on the development of a research agenda to address critical questions or provide key data required; oversees the work of staff assigned to projects.
  • Conceptualizes and designs complex research projects; selects the most appropriate data sources or data collection methods; oversees vendors and/or staff who implement the data collection plan.
  • Determines strategies for data analyses; conducts/leads data analyses including bivariate analysis, multivariate analysis, and other complex statistical techniques; advises other research staff on statistical and data analytic issues.
  • Communicates research findings for action by decision-makers; determines methods to communicate research results including through data visualization and graphics, when relevant; responds to complex and challenging requests for clarification and elaboration of research results.
  • Serves as an expert resource by actively sharing knowledge, collaborating with others, synthesizing research to provide integration and context, and ensuring the maintenance of up to date research records that are accessible by others; stays abreast of key news, policies, and consumer trends and applies that knowledge to proactively frame their own research.
  • Develops capacity by coaching and mentoring junior staff, participating in efforts to redesign workflow and systems, and providing peer review and technical assistance to other researchers.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an advanced degree (preferably a Ph.D.) in social/behavioral sciences, marketing research or a related discipline and 8+ years of progressively more responsible professional experience, including research project leadership, with an emphasis on applied research in area such as survey research, evaluation research, market research, communications research, or demographics.
  • Requires highly technical knowledge of applied research methodologies and issues; strong data analysis and statistical skills; excellent written and oral communications; excellent consultation and client relationship management.
  • Highly proficient in statistical packages, especially SPSS, as well as MicroSoft Office Suite (PowerPoint and Excel).
