Access & Consortial Loan Specialist - Library Specialist II

The George Mason University, Access Services Department is looking for an innovative and service-oriented person to aide in the provision of access and instructional support at the Fenwick Library, George Mason University's flagship library.

About the Position:

This position is responsible for providing courteous assistance to patrons at library service desks on the Fairfax Campus and aide in the provision of Course Reserve services, under the Access & Instructional Coordinator in Access Services, to process incoming reserve requests (physical and electronic) from faculty and to make these materials accessible to the GMU community.

Responsibilities:


  • Providing courteous service assistance to patrons at the library services desk and ensuring that Access Services staff also interact in a professional, fair, and consistent manner with all library patrons and staff;
  • Serving as senior person in charge of facilities and services during days, evenings, and weekend hours when staff in library administration or supervisor are not available, and may open or close Fenwick Library if assigned;
  • Charging out library materials, discharging returned materials, accepting payments for fines and fees, answering informational and basic reference questions, working with student assistants who staff the public service desk, and providing other related customer service;
  • Participating in the development, recommendation, implementation and administration of Access Services policies, procedures and processes; and
  • Serves as point of contact for Consortium loan service; processes incoming and outgoing materials.


Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree and/or significant equivalent academic library experience (2-3 years preferred);
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with current library systems (such as Alma) and research resources (such as EBSCO, JSTOR, ProQuest, etc.);
  • Demonstrated experience using an integrated library system, office productivity software, and computer equipment and software;
  • Strong customer service skills;
  • Aptitude for accurate and detail-oriented work;
  • Solid organizational skills, including ability to manage competing priorities for self and others, meet deadlines, and exercise good judgment;
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) for providing customer service in a diverse, academic environment and for interacting with library staff, faculty, students, and members of the public;
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills; and
  • Ability to remain calm, negotiate fairly and rationally, and exercise sound judgment under time pressure or in emotionally charged situations.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Demonstrated experience providing consortial loan or other resource sharing services;
  • Academic Library experience providing reference services; and
  • Experience training staff or student assistants.
