At Appian, we're not only about building awesome software, but also about growing our culture of passion, energy, and innovation; great people, great software! As a Senior Software Engineer on a performance-and reliability-oriented team, you will help build the next generation of our core low-code application development platform and help tackle our most challenging technical problems alongside other brilliant engineers.

What is Appian? It's a low code automation platform that lets business people build powerful enterprise web and mobile apps with flexible, visual models instead of clunky custom code.

About you:
  • You like to leverage your knowledge of data structures, best coding practices, and design patterns to write elegant and readable code

  • You're passionate about software performance and possess deep knowledge about the JVM

  • You're a tinkerer at heart with an innate ability to solve tough system problems and performance issues

  • You don't stop after getting the answer to a problem, you want to dig deeper and understand how each system works

  • You care about building reliable systems that scale well and can be monitored

Responsibilities:
  • Design new feature implementations and effectively communicate those designs verbally and in writing

  • Leverage relevant software development experience to radiate best practices and faster development

  • Utilize analysis tools (e.g. VisualVM) to diagnose issues with multithreading, heap usage, and garbage collection

  • Own a moderate degree of personal responsibility for the overall performance of the team, including capabilities, quality, stability, and velocity

  • Build automation and alerting to prevent problem recurrence

  • Identify and maintain service-level objectives (SLOs) to measure system performance degradation and alert on unexpected behaviors

  • Seek to identify opportunities for code refactoring and performance optimizations on a regular basis and champion these efforts within the team

  • Share advanced knowledge regularly on a team and occasionally with others in the department; build a reputation as a key resource in those areas

Preferred Experience Level:
  • B.S. and 5+ years of relevant professional experience; Experience in a high-volume or critical production service environment

Education:
  • B.S. in Computer Science or related field/degree
