Maintenance TechnicianThe George Mason University Department of Housing and Residence Life invites applications for a Maintenance Technician. About the Department:Housing and Residence Life is an auxiliary organization within the University Life unit of George Mason University. HRL employs over 170 full-time and graduate staff members and over 350 undergraduate student staff members, and is committed to provide a safe, well-maintained student-centered environment that is innovative and inclusive of the global community. It is dedicated to creating a home that enriches the experiences of our students, staff, and faculty.Responsibilities: Daily communications with Housing staff to ascertain current work needs; Tracks time and work orders in on-line work-order management system; Notifies supervisor within an hour of identifying the inability to repair or maintain an issue; Maintains inventory of equipment, supplies and tools; Electrical repairs; Plumbing repairs;HVAC: restarts all types of industrial HVAC units; Carpentry: performs carpentry repairs on doors, door hardware, windows, walls, shelving, and other carpentry repairs as needed such as replacing damaged drywall, shower tiles, and vanities; Painting: patching, caulking, priming, staining, and painting ceilings, walls, doors, windows, and other items as needed; General Building Maintenance: responds to building issues and resident requests for basic building needs including, but not limited to, exterior building maintenance, light bulb replacement, tile and other floor coverings installation, etc.; Inspects residential facilities and equipment during daily walk-throughs to ascertain required repairs and reports discrepancies; Communicates with the night shift any outstanding projects and unresolved issues; Troubleshoots, identifies needed appliance repairs and installs new appliances including, but not limited to microwaves, stoves/ovens, refrigerators, dishwashers, and range hoods; Is considered an essential employee for the Office of Housing and Residence Life in regards to severe weather; Is required to work on-call on a rotating basis which may include evening and weekend coverage; Is subject to recall after hours in the event of campus emergencies, disasters or other special needs as directed by management; Reports all matters of safety to the appropriate supervisor; Must strictly adhere to Key Control, Computing, Emergency Safety and Health, and Human Resource guideline and policies; Follows all State, University and departmental policies, procedures and practices; Performs snow removal, ice removal, and grounds upkeep; Picks-up and makes deliveries of supplies from vendors; Maintains proficiency at current level and continually updates knowledge through appropriate courses, seminars, publications, training sessions, and other contacts in the trade; Maintains acceptable attendance record, punctuality and meeting deadlines; Promptly reports accidents on the job, preparing and submitting accident reports; When instructed, attends and participates effectively in training sessions and meetings; Resolves maintenance issues by clarifying student complaint; Professionally handles incoming requests from students and stakeholders to ensure that issues are resolved both promptly and thoroughly; Provides quality service and support for maintenance issues and concerns; and Performs other related duties as assigned.Required Qualifications: General knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting/wall repairs and installation as needed; Strong customer service focus and demeanor; Basic computer skills; Ability to practice effective written and oral communication skills with students, faculty and staff; Ability to read, understand and abide by all safety policies and procedures; Ability to read, understand and follow equipment and system manuals; Because of the nature of the position and frequent verbal contact, candidates should command the English language; Strong customer service skills; andAbility to work well with others and in a team.Special licenses, registration, or certification: Valid driver's license with a good driving record; must be insurable; andHigh school education plus specialized training.Preferred Qualifications: HVAC certification; EPA certification in refrigerant handling and recovery; andPreferred-three (3) years related experience.
