The George Mason University, Human Resources and Payroll Department - Payroll Team is looking for an enthusiastic and energetic person for a Senior Accountant job opening.

About the Position:

The Senior Accountant will serve as the team lead in the payroll accounting operations unit and ensure that payroll accounting best practices and procedures are adhered to. The Senior Accountant works with the Director to ensure that all federal, state and university reporting deadlines are met as prescribed by the federal, state and the University.

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of payroll best practices, accounting, working with the general ledger, account reconciliations, complex HR/Payroll systems, calendar and fiscal year end reporting (W2s/1042s), experience with working with large payroll data using Excel;
  • The ability to work collaboratively with end users, internal and external departments and knowledgeable of federal and state tax laws and regulations. Experience with multi-state and international taxation is a plus;
  • Ensure payroll reconciliations are completed by the prescribed internal deadlines and the deadlines set forth by DHRM. Work with the accountants, benefits and external departments to resolve any discrepancies monthly and before the end of the fiscal year;
  • Work with the external vendor to balance and submit 941s, 941 amendments and state quarterly filing by the prescribed deadlines and reconcile calendar year end 941s, 1042s to W2s; and
  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting, finance, or business administration, or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Demonstrated experience (3-5 years preferred) working in an HR/Payroll environment and 2-3 years working in an accounting environment (preferred).
