Associate Nursing Director The George Mason University, Student Health Services department invites applications for an Associate Nursing Director position. About the Department: Student Health Services (SHS) provides health care services at George Mason University . SHS provides primary care services and health promotion to eligible students at George Mason University, including but not limited to, initial and follow up assessment, history taking, physical exam of patients, utilization of differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations and referrals as indicated, and basic emergency treatment and stabilization. Staff provide services to faculty, staff, and visitors on an as needed basis. Responsibilities: The Associate Nursing Director for Mason Student Health Services is responsible for the overall smooth clinical operations of the student health clinics located on the Fairfax, Arlington and Prince William campuses, and leads strategies and planning to continually improve nursing clinical care and clinic operations. The position reports to the Executive Director and is a member of the Student Health Services leadership team and the SHS executive committee. The role requires working closely with the Executive Director, Associate Medical Director, Associate Administrative Director, Office Manager, healthcare providers, nursing staff, as well as patients to assure the highest quality of care. In addition, the position is responsible for providing direct supervision to clinical classified and wage registered nurse staff responsible for the appropriate nursing care and safe functioning of the clinic. This is a restricted position. Clinic Operations The Associate Nursing Director oversees the complete operation and performance of the clinic; they are responsible for ensuring daily clinical staffing and inventory needs are met, including making recommendations for increased staffing, new supplies or equipment required to improve care. They lead nursing effectiveness strategies, provides direct oversight of daily clinical team operations and patient flow. Successfully manages daily clinical operations including staffing readiness, inventory and facility operations. Participates as an active member of one of five designated SHS clinical committees, and supports health care providers and nursing staff by providing ambulatory nursing care and services. The position monitors the daily volume of patients and delegates tasks to team members to ensure efficient processing of the flow of patients through the clinic. It adheres to budget, and oversees the ordering of medical supplies. Provides nursing oversight for the Arlington and Science & Technology clinics;Using standard performance improvement and quality metrics, created, implements, and evaluates the quality and efficiency of the level of care delivered to patients;Creates operational goals and objectives for the clinical team and/or SHS facility and monitors outcomes;Communicates effectively with staff and department leaders;Monitors and directs patient flow management effectively and efficiently;Creates work schedules for the SHS clinical team, comprised of registered nurses, medical assistants, lab technicians and front office staff; Assists patients experiencing staff or facility problems while visiting SHS;Attends All Hands Meetings and provides clinical team meetings at least monthly;Provides necessary reports as indicated to the Executive Committee and AAAHC;Gives direction for clinical operations at satellite locations; Collaborates with NP leader at each satellite location for clinic scheduling; Ensures clinics are up to date and current with Fairfax Procedures; Maintain personal competencies in nursing roles including triage, patient flow, injection and immunizations, venipuncture and lab;Support in times of staff deficiency for nursing roles; andOversight of high-quality nursing staff clinical competencies.Clinic Compliance/Infection Control/SafetyAssociate Nursing Director is responsible for clinical training compliance, including required OSHA training, respiratory protection, respiratory fit testing. The Associate Nursing Director assures employee immunization requirements and records are up to date and available on file. Serves as a member of the SHS Executive Committee and is tasked with establishing and maintaining nursing standards and assures all staff implement best practices when interacting with patients, coworkers and visitors. The position assures requirements are complete for tri-annual AAAHC recertification, that infection control standards and safety procedures are met and maintained in accordance with the guidelines and policies set forth by the CDC, FCHD, ACHA and SHS Infection Control Committee. Contributes to continuous process improvement and proactively seeks opportunities for education, quality audits and improvements. The position arranges for required OSHA and Infection Control inspections. Ensures clinical personnel training and clinical facility operational compliance, including required OSHA training, clinical competency verification, respiratory protection, respiratory fit testing. Ensures SHS annual, biannual and triannual training and competency requirements are met in accordance with policy and procedures. Monitors quality and infection control measures for compliance;Oversees medical and limited pharmaceutical supply inventories and ordering; Arranges for regular clinical inventory audits;All three campus facility locations are compliant with current regulations, laws and standards;Ensures that clinical staff are completing daily, weekly, monthly checklists in order to meet AAAHC accreditation requirements;Utilizes PowerDMS to monitor, create, review and approve nursing related policies and procedures according to standards and guidelines set forth by Virginia Department of Nursing and supporting standards of care and practice;Revises and updates as required by changes in state and federal guidelines;Provides recommendations for change to the Executive Director and to the Executive Committee for final approval;Participates as an active member of the Executive Committee; andOversees planning for All SHS Faculty and Staff for Annual OSHA and Fire Safety Training.Supervision SHS Associate Nursing Director in collaboration with the lead nurse oversees SHS registered nurses and medical assistants as they provide healthcare services to patients, including training, and mentoring staff, consulting on patient management as it relates to nursing care or triage. Evaluates efficiencies and processes to ensure safe and adequate staffing, and oversees clinical staffing, mass vaccination efforts, and the SHS nurse triage program. The Associate Nursing Director participates in the hiring process by participating on search committees, interviewing and hiring of nursing staff or other department or university hiring. Engages and evaluates performance to assure that standard operating policies and procedures, regulatory guidelines and best practice are followed. Provides direct supervision to classified and non-student wage registered nurses and indirect supervisor of medical assistants. Maintains a positive and motivated working environment for staff and students. Participates as a hiring supervisor for new or re-hire positions. Maintains safe staffing numbers and alerts the SHS Leadership team when census trends are occurring to reevaluate potential staff shortages. Engages and evaluates employee and operational performance. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of Mason HR policies and procedures for employee management, including EWP, Position descriptions, and evaluation procedures;Oversees new hire triage training and competency for all classified and non-student wage registered nurses; Supports employees by offering regular feedback during scheduled one on one and group meetings. Submits evaluations in accordance with Mason requirements and without delay;Provides employee, constructive feedback, including interim evaluations as appropriate to staff;Monitors, counsels and documents employee performance, keeps supervisor up to date with employee performance; Handles personnel complaints and grievances and reports issues and concerns to the HR Liaison and SHS Leadership; Completes timely approval of timesheets and assists employees in resolving payroll concerns. Monitors and reports employee time worked or absences; Maintains employee personnel file in the facility in accordance with HR Policy and SHS guidelines; Provides ongoing group and individual coaching for all staff; Conducts recruitment for potential nursing positions, and participates in search committees for front desk and medical assistant employees; andSeeks feedback from regional clinic NP leaders for RN employee evaluations and one on one meetings. Continuity of Operations and Emergency Preparedness Planning The Associate Nursing Director collaborates as an active member of the George Mason University Emergency Operations Committee and Mason Continuity Coordination Team; Attends meetings in the absence of the Primary and Secondary members. Provides review and input on SHS Continuing Operations Plan (COOP) in collaboration with Safety, Emergency and Enterprise Risk Management;Collaborates as an active member of the George Mason University Emergency Operations Committee and attends meetings in the absence of the Primary and Secondary members;The Associate Director of Nursing in collaboration with the Associate Administrative Director reviews and completes the SHS Continuity of Operations plan; Actively participates as a member of the Mason Emergency Operations Committee, attends required quarterly meetings and trainings; andMaintains Mason EHS Emergency Operations Plans on sight and reviews and/or updates SHS specific plans as needed.Required Qualifications: In-depth nursing knowledge and a demonstrated ability to apply the principles, practices and procedures of professional nursing; to recognize potential serious patient problems, to make nursing assessments, to provide health prevention, maintenance and teaching when communicating with patients, families, co-workers and others; Must be able to interpret and document assessments and findings clearly and articulately using the appropriate medical nomenclature and drawing appropriate clinical conclusions; Demonstrate strong attention to detail; good organization and planning skills;Strong written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills; Ability to lead and motivate others, influence and guide team members and direct reports; Ability to effectively manage and supervise professional and non-professional staff, and have the ability to establish and maintain positive relationships. Have strong/extensive clinical skills in order to precept, and train clinical staff;Must have basic knowledge of accounting principles and practices, and nomenclature; Licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or valid Multi-State License;Healthcare Provider BLS certification;OSHA Training;Infection Control Training and/or Certification;Must be a graduate of an accredited bachelor of science or master's degree program;At least five years of nursing experience in a hospital or health care setting in addition to clinical experience obtained while seeking a nursing degree;At least three years of supervisory experience; Experience with clinical outpatient operations benchmarking, and operational performance improvement practices;Experience and knowledge of adult ambulatory care practices; understanding of the unique needs of a college student;Recent Triage Experience;Experience with procurement of medical supplies and budget management; andExperience and knowledge of Virginia Department of Nursing Standards of Care.Preferred Qualifications: MSN preferred;At least one year of experience in a physician's office preferred, ideally in adult medicine or college health;Experience and knowledge of AAAHC, OSHA, CDC, Infection Control and Safety Guidelines preferred;At least one year of Student Health Services clinical experience preferred;Primary Care Clinic or emergency room supervisory experience preferred; andPrevious experience in telephonic and in-person triage is preferred.
