Access and Instructional Support Specialist The George Mason University Libraries' Access Services Department is looking for an innovative and service-oriented person to aid in the provision of access and instructional support at the Fenwick Library, George Mason University's flagship library. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.This position is responsible for providing courteous assistance to patrons at library service desks on the Fairfax Campus and aid in the provision of Course Reserve services, under the Access & Instructional Coordinator in Access Services, to process incoming reserve requests (physical and electronic) from faculty and to make these materials accessible to the GMU community. Responsibilities: Charging out library materials, discharging returned materials, accepting payments for fines and fees, answering informational and basic reference questions, working with student assistants who staff the public service desk, and providing other related customer service;Participating in borrowing, scanning, and course reserves activities and operations on the Fairfax campus;Participating in the development, recommendation, implementation and administration of Access Services policies, procedures and processes; andServing as senior person in charge of library facilities and services when staff in library administration, supervisor, and Head, Access Services are not available, and open or close Fenwick Library as assigned.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree and/or significant equivalent academic library experience (2-3 years preferred);Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with current library systems (such as Alma) and research resources (such as EBSCO, JSTOR, ProQuest, etc.);Demonstrated experience using an integrated library system, office productivity software, and computer equipment and software;Strong customer service skills;Aptitude for accurate and detail-oriented work;Solid organizational skills, including ability to manage competing priorities for self and others, meet deadlines, and exercise good judgment;Effective interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) for providing customer service in a diverse, academic environment and for interacting with library staff, faculty, students, and members of the public;Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills; andAbility to remain calm, negotiate fairly and rationally, and exercise sound judgment under time pressure or in emotionally charged situations.Preferred Qualifications:Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of copyright and fair use as they relate to Reserve materials or Resource Sharing;Experience providing physical and/or electronic Course Reserve services;Academic Library experience providing reference services; andExperience training student assistants.The George Mason University library system, comprised of a large central library and three other distinctive libraries, is located on three campuses in the Northern Virginia-metropolitan Washington, D.C., region.
