Senior Fiscal Travel Technician

The George Mason University Purchasing and Accounts Payable Department is searching for a Senior Fiscal Travel Technician to assist in administering the university travel expense and card program. Reporting to the Travel Manager, this position will provide expense review and customer service to university stakeholders. Fiscal Services Provides accurate and timely financial data to ensure comprehensive reporting, compliance, and analysis to enable strategic decision-making. The Purchasing Department oversees the procurement of goods and services by collaborating with units in making strategic purchasing decisions in addition to ensuring all Commonwealth and Mason purchasing policies are followed.


The Senior Fiscal Travel Technician will ensure that travel reimbursement operations are conducted in a timely basis in accordance with commonwealth and university policy. Duties include:

  • Analyzing travel expense reports in the Mason Finance Gateway (MFG) to determine compliance with State and University rules and regulations. Adjust expenses when needed to align with the mandated regulations;
  • Assisting Mason employees and non-employees regarding travel/reimbursement policies and procedures, and guiding employees in completion of reimbursement requests;
  • Providing support for Athletics travel by processing advances, expenses, review travel P-Card expenses for compliance and customer service support to their department;
  • Answering and assisting the campus travelers with technical support of the MFG. Provide guidance on the requirements for pre-approvals and post trip expense reports. Provide customer service by responding to both travel and MFG emails within one day. Backup travel administrator to MFG;
  • Serving as the Travel card administrator by supporting all needs for the Individual and Agency travel card. Provide back up support to the P-Card team when needed;
  • Assisting departmental leadership in completing various seasonal tasks, including providing support to the Pcard and Vendor Maintenance teams, when necessary;
  • Ensuring compliance with internal policies, agency rules and regulations, and generally accepted accounting principles; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned or required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university;
  • Experience using a travel reimbursement or management system such as Concur or Chrome River;
  • Prior experience handling travel reimbursement processing in a high-volume department;
  • Prior management of a travel card program;
  • Experience applying travel expense processing against a wide variety of complex travel rules and regulations that apply to local, state and federal laws; and
  • Ability to work independently with a low error rate at a high rate of speed.
