COVID Epidemiologist

About the Department:


Student Health Services (SHS) provides health care services at George Mason University. SHS provides primary care services and health promotion to eligible students at George Mason University, including but not limited to initial and follow up assessment, history taking, physical exam of patients, utilization of differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations and referrals as indicated, and basic emergency treatment and stabilization. Staff provide services to faculty, staff, and visitors on an as needed basis.

About the Position:


The SHS Epidemiologist manages and analyzes COVID-19 data for Student Health Services, to identify clusters/outbreaks, leads quality assurance efforts for case and close contact tracking of SHS patients, provides operational support for data needs for Student Health Services and Outbreak Mitigation Management team, analyzes, interprets, and presents epidemiological data. In coordination with the SHS physicians and other SHS team members, the SHS Epidemiologist is responsible for conducting epidemiologic analysis, interpreting findings, and presenting learned knowledge through written and oral communications.

Responsibilities:

  • Case/cluster/outbreak surveillance of COVID-19 among Mason students with timely, accurate recording of cases, close contacts managed by SHS;
  • Regular reporting of trends to SHS physicians, OMMT, and other units, including synthesizing information and presenting data on trends;
  • Data analysis of COVID cases and contacts for SHS, UL and university needs;
  • Keeping abreast of latest CDC and VDH/Virginia guidelines/requirements regarding COVID mitigation strategies and communication to SHS of these updates;
  • Collaboration with others to develop audience-appropriate health communication messages and materials;
  • Maintaining situational awareness of the COVID situation in Northern Virginia and at the university, and update SHS physicians and leadership through regular situation reports; and
  • Remaining flexible and agile regarding evolving needs during the pandemic and evolving university situation, completes other duties as assigned.



Required Qualifications:


  • Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to a master's degree in Public Health (MPH) or Master of Science (MS) with graduate work in epidemiology and/or biostatistics plus two years of experience in epidemiology-related work;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment; and
  • Experience with Excel spreadsheets, especially pivot tables.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Demonstrated ability to analyze health data;
  • Use of Excel;
  • Experience with Electronic health record (EHR) and managing of confidential information; and
  • Experience working in medical field.
