Occupational Safety Specialist The George Mason University Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHS), within the Department of Safety, Emergency, and Enterprise Risk Management, is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual for the position of Occupational Safety Specialist. About the Position: The Occupational Safety Specialist supports EHS in daily matters with an emphasis on safety and the implementation of a comprehensive Occupational Health and Safety program to support the university's mission of research and teaching. Responsibilities:Manage safety training programs;Coordinate closely with university departments regarding safety and health issues;Conduct job safety analyses and inspections for university employees;Interpret and implement applicable regulations and guidelines;Assess physical risks;Review facilities plans;Review research proposals and safety procedures. Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, directly related Science, Engineering, Environmental Science, or Public Health discipline; or a combination of education and experience;Progressively responsible experience in the occupational health and safety field (at least 2 years preferred);Ability to work independently, under pressure, with strong problem-solving skills;Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple projects simultaneously;Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and writing);Strong organizational and time management skills;Ability to meet inflexible deadlines on own initiative;Knowledge of applicable safety regulations and guidelines including proper personal protective equipment and training requirements;Knowledge of safety equipment (fall protection, personal protective equipment, etc.) and how it functions;Ability to implement and maintain applicable safety programs;Ability to coordinate and deliver applicable safety training to a diverse audience;Ability to conduct a thorough safety inspection;Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects;Ability to use a computer fluently including Microsoft Office software;Ability to lift 40 lbs, bend, crawl, and kneel;Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review. Preferred Qualifications:Experience at an institution of higher education;Experience conducting accident/incident investigations;Ability to obtain certification in CPR/First Aid;Associate Safety Professional (ASP);Certified Safety and Health Manager, or other relevant professional certification.
