Responsibilities

The Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor has immediate supervisory responsibility for all operational maintenance programs within the park (including budgeting, personnel aspects, safety, and training) relating to the maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of the park's roads, grounds, trails, and automotive repair. The division is responsible for maintaining the 8,626-acre park, which includes four battlefields and a National Cemetery. The Maintenance Division has 17 permanent employees, up to 6 seasonal employees, an annual operating budget of $1.3 million, and cyclic funding of $100,000 to $300,000 per year.
  • Serves as Acting Chief of Maintenance approximately 10% of the time.
  • Exercises full field supervisory responsibility for all maintenance operations and assigned day labor construction and contract projects.
  • Responsible for the accomplishment of a variety of maintenance projects that are being performed continuously throughout the park.
  • Makes assignments of personnel and equipment to projects as deemed necessary.
  • Advises and assures personnel are properly trained on technical matters concerning: historic landscapes, equipment operation, road construction and repair, trail construction and repair, grounds maintenance, and equipment repair and maintenance to best meet the needs of public and employee health/life/safety/service and economy.
This position is located in the Facility Management branch of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park . Please visit the park's website for additional park information. Fredericksburg, Virginia is approximately 45 miles south of Washington, D.C. and 60 miles north of Richmond, Virginia. The colonial and Civil War history of the area, as well as many recreational opportunities on local waterways and natural areas make the Fredericksburg area a popular tourist destination. The park's battlefields and historic structures span four counties in the Fredericksburg area, with the highest population density being in the City of Fredericksburg, Stafford County and Spotsylvania County areas. Many options for schools, shopping, dining, cultural opportunities and medical care are easily accessed. Within a short drive from these growing populations centers, you will find yourself in the more rural and scenic Virginia countryside. The local climate is temperate, with hot and humid summers and relatively mild winters.

  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain certification as a Contracting Officer's Technical Representative (COTR).
  • You will be required to complete a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, OGE-450 on an annual basis.

    Physical Demands: Position requires ability to perform light to heavy physical labor; required to stand, stoop, lift, and walk significant distances to inspect job sites. May be required to work long days (greater than 10 hours) and a 7-day work week during snowstorms or other environmental conditions that adversely affect the park.

    Working Conditions: Working conditions will vary from heated interior shop space to extended periods of time out-of-doors with exposure to high humidity and temperatures ranging from -10 to 105 degrees. Conditions may be slick, dirty, and dusty. The incumbent will experience noise and vibration during the operation of equipment. Incumbent will be exposed to pesticides during pesticide application.

    The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.

    Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.
