Director, Risk Management - Data Management Advisor

As a Director in Capital One's Enterprise Data Management (EDM) team, sitting within Capital One's Risk Management organization, you will apply your analytical, data management, and process management skills to support development and adoption of Capital One's data management strategy. You will collaborate with your EDM team and partner with stakeholders across the enterprise on initiatives to help drive transformation and change necessary to achieve the Company's data management strategic objectives and reduce our data risk across the line of business you support.

Data Management Advisors in Enterprise Data Management are highly motivated Risk & Data Management professionals with excellent organization, problem-solving, influence and communication skills. These individuals have the opportunity to create and implement innovative solutions and processes to identify and mitigate potential data risks across Capital One.

On a given day you will be:
  • Become a trusted advisor to the business partners providing expert advice and effective challenge on data management risks and controls
  • Identify opportunities and work with business stakeholders and partners to embed data management practices into our daily operations and business processes across the organization
  • Use analytical skills to conduct data risk assessments, control validations, and reviews of business data strategies
  • Perform gap assessments and create recommendations to ensure progress towards organizational adoption of data management transformation
  • Collaborate within EDM and with our Partners on areas of metadata management, data quality management and data stewardship functions
  • Work with partners to identify areas of data risk with data management tools and controls in emerging data platforms
  • Perform 2nd line of defense assessment of risk and compliance with data management practices and processes


An ideal candidate will possess a unique combination of business understanding, problem solving abilities, data management domain knowledge, technical aptitude, and a well developed risk mindset. This position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong judgment on when to escalate risks to the business and within risk management.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • At least 7 years of experience with data management
  • At least 7 years of experience with risk identification, control development, audit, regulatory compliance or a combination
  • At least 2 years of experience in people management


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree or PhD in a Finance, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Industrial Engineering, or Operations Research
  • 5+ years of experience in financial services industry
  • 5+ years of experience in validating data management controls
  • 2+ years of experience with data governance
  • 2+ years of experience with predictive analytics
  • 2 years leading and developing with open source data technologies
