If you are selected for this position you may perform some of the following duties:
  • Performs legal research for assigned projects, including research on relevant case law, statutes, rules, and legal guidance and interpretations. Utilizes legal and economic databases, reports, and other materials. Reports orally and/or in writing on the results of such research for inclusion in memoranda, briefs, draft opinions and orders, and similar documents
  • Conducts research on assigned projects to provide needed factual information. This research may include locating information from files, libraries, computerized databases, and the Internet. Reports orally and/or in writing on the results of such research for inclusion in memoranda, briefs, draft opinions and orders, and similar documents
  • Supervises cite-checking performed by paralegals. In addition, cite-checks information when necessary beyond or instead of cite-checking performed by paralegals. Reviews, proofs, and formats official Opinions issued by the Commission in adjudicative proceedings.
  • Reviews, proofs, and formats memoranda and draft opinions and orders prepared for the Commission and other written work products in accordance with rules and established Commission procedures
  • Coordinates with others within OGC and, as appropriate, other offices within the agency, to review confidentiality of materials in a timely manner
  • Handles all aspects of the day-to-day management within OGC as assigned, including but not limited to, the preparation and monitoring of time and attendance records, organizing and maintaining files, ordering supplies, assisting with travel arrangements, making approved purchases via the OGC purchase card, and serving as the back-up fund manager to the OGC Chief of Staff
  • Performs miscellaneous legal support duties and special projects, as assigned

To qualify for a Program Specialist (LEGAL) at the GS-0301-11 level, you must meet the following requirements:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Performing legal research on assigned projects, to include; case law, statutes, rules, legal guidance and interpretations. Utilizing legal and economic databases, reports and other materials to produce oral and written reports; Conducting research on assigned projects to provide needed facts and information; this may include locating information from files, libraries, computerized databases and the internet.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Only experience and education obtained by the closing date of this announcement will be considered. Status candidates must meet time-in-grade requirements (52 weeks at the next lower grade level) within 30 days of the vacancy closing date.
