Job Req ID: 62477 CO Patient Service Coordinator The Ophthalmology Department is seeking a Patient Service Coordinator who will offer professional, courteous and confidential assistance to patients face-to-face and by telephone to ensure a positive patient encounter at the Wilmer Institute. Uses EPIC to expedite patient scheduling, check-in and check-out, process IN-BASKET messages and monitor faculty schedules. Works with others fostering a team environment. Specific Duties & Responsibilities: * Check-in patients for Pediatric Ophthalmology Division, Neuro-Ophthalmology Division, Echography and Visual Neuro Physiology Services. * Confirm interpreter availability when needed, and advise faculty/ technical staff. * Regularly make appointments for Echography patients if no appointment was made by the referring physician. Often requires a telephone call to the referring provider office. * Monitor e-mail messages from the Wilmer Call Center, and respond or forward messages to expedite communication between patients and providers. * Receive and respond to non-routine phone calls from the Wilmer Call Center and internal / external callers. * Assist patients during check-out, including printing AVS and eyeglass prescriptions, scheduling return appointments using EPIC, scheduling appropriate interpretation services, calling for transport, etc. * Schedule patients for medical examinations, consultations, imaging and laboratory tests including those patients seen at satellite offices. * Obtain referrals and authorizations. * Scan patient related documents to EPIC including patient medical records, referrals, authorizations. * Understanding of and compliance with HIPAA policies to respond to medical record requests for the Division. * Working knowledge of EPIC to access and capture patient clinic and operative notes. Includes printing patient notes, and in some cases mailing or faxing copies as needed. Scope of Responsibility: * Knows the formal and informal divisional and departmental goals, standards, policies and procedures which may include familiarity of other departments within the school. Is sensitive to the interrelationship of people and functions within the department. Decision Making: * Carries out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision. * Makes decisions and establishes work priorities on essential, procedure-oriented operations. Authority: * Does not direct the activities of staff or a function. Minimum Qualifications (Required) High School Diploma or GED * One (1) year work experience in customer service required. * Two (2) years related work experience preferred. * Knowledge of medical insurance coverage preferred. * Medical terminology, and basic computer skills preferred. Preferred Qualifications: * Two years college or equivalent work experience * Additional education may be substituted for up to one year of experience. * Medical terminology a plus. * Experience within the Johns Hopkins patient-oriented community strongly preferred. Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Intermediate computer skills required * Excellent communication skills and ability to multi-task. * Must be detailed and organized. * Understand HIPAA rules and regulations to ensure patient privacy. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
