Job Description

The Washington Post is hiring a Software Engineer for our Publishing Tools engineering team. The Publishing Tools team supports the newsroom by maintaining and improving the tools they use to produce, edit and schedule content. Our ideal candidate is fearless with their ideas and communicates thoughtfully and compassionately. This team is looking for engineers who are motivated to learn new technologies and expand their skillset.

  • The Publishing Tools team is an agile organization employing scrum methods to continuously build and deploy software applications that allow our newsroom to edit and produce captivating stories.
  • Washington Post Engineering is a department of more than 600 people working to support The Post's world-class newsroom.


Responsibilities
  • Empower our editors to rapidly produce engaging stories by collaborating with them on the full spectrum of their workflows.
  • Deliver a seamless and engaging user experience by brainstorming and building new features and optimizations for our custom-built story writing and scheduling softwares.
  • Build an integrated and flourishing ecosystem of micro-services to deliver content to our readers by guiding technical decisions and participating in technical architecture discussions.
  • Work directly with our partners in product as well as newsroom and business-side stakeholders and translate requirements into technical tasks.
  • Support the reliability of our core infrastructure as part of an on-call rotation.


Minimum Qualifications
  • 1+ year of software engineering experience
  • Some experience with JavaScript and the React and/or Angular framework.
  • Familiarity with back-end technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, and JUnit.
  • Familiarity with Amazon Web Services (AWS) such as S3, ECS, EC2, and Cloudfront.
  • Familiarity with relational databases such as MySQL or NoSQL databases like MongoDB.
  • Eagerness to explore and learn new programming languages, tools and applications.


Preferred qualifications
  • Experience building web applications on AWS.
  • Familiarity with Javascript module bundling technologies like Webpack.
  • Experience in agile software development teams working iteratively with designers, product managers, and stakeholders.
