Responsibilities: Under general supervision of the Senior Director of Human Resources, the Manager of Benefits and Wellness performs daily benefits functions for Regular faculty and staff, contractual faculty and staff to include new hire orientation and resolving benefits-related matters. This position also functions as the Wellness Coordinator for the University and the Telework Coordinator in accordance with the State of Maryland Guidelines. Coordinates tuition remission for Faculty, Staff, Contingents, Dependent and Graduate students. Receives, reviews and processes enrollment benefit forms, coordinates the Statewide Personnel System (SPS) process, retirement, and worker’s compensation for all new hires; including Exempt, Non-Exempt and Contingent employees. Researches, analyzes and consolidates data for reports e.g. SPS and tuition remission, open enrollment, retirement, and workman’s compensation and OSH. Closes out benefits files for all Regular and Contingent Ii employees who terminate from the University. Makes changes as relates to salary, transfers and other personnel action for Contingent II employees through the Action/Reason process in PeopleSoft. Assists in establishing and updating personnel files and databases. Reviews and coordinates the SPS process and audit data for accuracy. Ensures confidentiality of information as required. Maintains a database of employees who are Teleworking and provide regular reports on the process or as necessary. Conducts Benefits Briefing with employees and relevant matters. Stays current with benefits as provided by the Department of Budget and Management and the University System of Maryland. Coordinates benefits programs such as New Hire Orientation, Open Enrollment Seminar, and Pre-Retirement Seminar in collaboration with the Manager of Training and other programs as assigned.
Assists in the coordination of disability leave for faculty and staff to include Family Medical Leave. Provide written communication and maintain medical records. Serves on the University System of Maryland Committees as appropriate. Gathers and consolidates data for reports following general instructions. Prepares correspondence and recurring reports.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or other related field. Master’s degree preferred. Three years of Human Resources experience with two year concentration in benefits administration in a Human Resources office. Benefits experience in University System of Maryland school is highly desirable. PHR, SPHR Certification desirable. Experience with PeopleSoft (or HRIS) preferred. Thorough knowledge of human resources practices and procedures with special emphasis on benefits. Skilled in using computers and software to include Windows/Microsoft Office (Word and Excel); in organizing and executing multiple assignments under specific time constraints. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to provide guidance and training to others; to maintain poise and courtesy under pressure; to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact; and to accurately perform mathematical computations; and to operate standard office equipment.
Conditions of Employment: Position may require frequent moving around and ability to access files which may be in storage. Ability to operate keyboard to prepare reports that may require constant sitting and keystrokes. May be required to transport training materials when conducting training sessions. Some local travel may be required to attend training sessions. Please be advised, COVID-19 vaccinations are required for faculty and staff to be employed at Bowie State University.
SALARY: $65,000-$70,000 RANGE: II
