Unpaid internships with DFC are offered year round in Washington, D.C., lasting from 12 weeks to 12 months with varying work schedules. Duties vary based on the department and/or office in which the intern is placed. DFC's Internship Program offers valuable experience that contributes to educational and professional growth, and may be applied in any future employment endeavor, including federal, state and local governments or in the private sector.

Responsibilities

The Social Risk Analysis Intern will work at the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), Office of Development Policy (ODP). Through the application of DFC's development analysis and Environmental & Social Policies and Procedures (ESPP), ODP works to ensure projects produce positive developmental impacts, apply best practices with respect to environmental and social safeguards, and respect human rights, including worker rights. The Social Risk Analysis Intern will assist in assessing and monitoring risks and impacts to project affected people and the project workforce.

As a Social Risk Analysis Intern with Office of Development Policy (ODP), you will:
  • Use publicly available information and project-specific documentation such as ESIAs and baseline assessments, environmental and social management plans, etc. to analyze social risks in potential DFC-sponsored projects, focusing on those related to affected communities, vulnerable groups, indigenous peoples, cultural heritage, security personnel, and workers.
  • Screen potential DFC-sponsored projects and assist in making initial recommendations regarding project eligibility and the appropriate level of environmental and social due diligence.
  • Assist analysts in monitoring projects for compliance with DFC contractual conditions related to environmental and social performance.
  • Attend relevant events and report back to DFC staff.
  • Conduct research on important environmental and social policy issues related to specific industries, countries, international standards, and other topics.
  • Assist the Social Risk team with administrative duties.

Qualifications

Applicants must be U.S. citizens enrolled at least part-time in an accredited college or university in a full- or part-time accredited advanced degree program (e.g. Master's, Juris Doctor, Ph.D.) in good academic standing, concentrating in: International Relations/Affairs/Development/Business/Finance/Trade, Global Policy, Human Rights, Anthropology, Social Impact, Corporate Social Responsibility, International/Labor/Employment Law, Public Policy, Diplomacy, International Project Finance, Political Science, Sociology, or other related fields.

Knowledge of the International Finance Corporation Performance Standards and other international development, social assessment, human rights, or labor initiatives is desirable.

Candidates should also have strong analytical abilities; verbal and written communication skills; internet and library-based research skills; computer proficiency; and multitasking capabilities.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. Stipulations of Employment:

As required by Executive Order 14043, Federal executive branch employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 regardless of the employee's duty location or work arrangement (e.g., telework, remote work, etc.), subject to such exceptions as required by law. DFC will provide additional information regarding which forms of documentation can be accepted and how you can request a legally required exception from this requirement.
