Requisition #: 399412 Location: Howard County General Hospital, 5755 Cedar Lane, Columbia MD 21044 Shift: Part Time (36 hours) 7:00 pm - 7:30 am Non-Exempt Weekend Work Required Summary: The Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs direct patient care tasks under the direction of the Registered Nurse and performs various tasks as competency documentation designates. Work occasionally requires internal contacts outside the work group to exchange relevant information. Communication with external contacts involves providing or giving factual information. Education/Experience: 1. High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma. 2. Completion of an approved medical training program beyond high school (ie, PCT Training Program, Nursing Technician). 3. Completion of an approved phlebotomy course preferred. 4. Minimum of one (1) year hands-on patient care experience in a hospital setting providing patient care is preferred. 5. Nursing students are excluded from the above requirements while they are actively enrolled in an approved nursing program and after completion of a Fundamentals of Nursing course. Nursing students must successfully complete the hospital-based PCT Training program prior to performing the duties of a patient care technician. Licensure/Certifications: 1. Nursing Assistant Certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing required. 2. Current CPR certification. Knowledge/Skills: 1. Phlebotomy, EKG, foley catheter insertion, basic respiratory/physical therapy skills preferred. 2. Must be able to pass all hospital competencies required for the position. 3. Employee demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her unit as indicated by the following: * Demonstrates ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs. * Identifies the physical, motor, sensory, cognitive and psychosocial characteristics for age group(s) served. * Demonstrates age appropriate communication skills. * Demonstrates ability to provide the care needed as described in the job description and the department's scope of service for the patient groups under his/her care. Age group(s) served will be one or more of the following: Infant (Birth to 12 months), Child (13 months to 12 years), Adolescent (13 years to 17 years), Adult (18 years to 69 years) or Geriatric (70 years and older). 4. Has access to clean supply areas including, but not limited to IV solutions, needles, and syringes for the purpose of obtaining linen and/or supplies.
