Description Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation seeks a hardworking and innovative Nature Facility & Program Manager to lead staff, programs, and facilities at Old Maryland Farm, located in Watkins Regional Park in Upper Marlboro, MD. We are looking for a positive and dynamic individual that enjoys engaging with the public, staff and livestock, and promoting the farm as one of the outstanding farm experiences in the County. Old Maryland Farm provides visitors the wonderful opportunity to experience a small farm and improve their agricultural literacy through interpretive programming, live animal exhibits, herb and vegetable gardens, hayrides, and animal care demonstrations. The farm is an agricultural education facility operating as a public demonstration farm with a variety of livestock that include chickens, peafowl, pigs, goats, sheep, horses, cows, and more. Watkins Regional Park is almost 900 acres and has active agriculture fields. This position will also be responsible for managing the 'Urban Agriculture Incubator' and the 'Honey Bee Collective' with a focus on education and developing a successful model that can be duplicated at other sites. Lastly, the park enjoys over a million visitors a year and this position will assist with supporting other activities in the park. Examples of Important Duties Demonstrates outstanding team leadership and management skills, schedules and supervises staff, interns, and volunteers; evaluates performance; assigns and reviews workProactively cultivates relationships with the community and generates support around the farm; forms connections with various community agencies, non-profits, leaders, and appropriate partners; promoting collaboration to fulfill broader causes;Handles operating procedures, such as hours of operation, security, safety practices, visitor rules, facility maintenance, and related matters. Reviews and revises procedures as needed; Develops and submits program, policy and operating proposals for approval; coordinates the work of contractors/ facility improvementsEncourages environmental and agricultural literacy among County residents and visitors by providing high quality educational programs and guest experiences that reflect the mission of the farm and the Department;Demonstrates extensive skill and experience in the development and delivery of engaging interpretive programs for all ages as well as agricultural education and science-based programming to meet school curriculum standards;Ensures the highest level of standards are met with animal husbandry and management; ensures compliance with all applicable policies, rules, regulations, and laws;Capitalizes on revenue generating opportunities with a results-oriented spirit to supplement the operating budget;Ensures budget, personnel management, record-keeping, and other administrative functions are carried out optimally and according toCommission policies.Background in agriculture, soil health, and conservation standard methodologies. Important Worker Characteristics:Considerable knowledge of: the purpose and functions of the Commission's natural and cultural history interpretive programs and their role in the community.*Expert knowledge of: a specialty area or extensive knowledge of a subject matter of naturalist area and related natural, life or physical sciences involved in the subject. Good knowledge of: (1) animal science; (2) agricultural science; (3) principles and practices of interpreting natural history and culture to the public; (4) effective methods and techniques of supervision; (5) management principles applied to the planning and organizing of facility programs, services and operations; (6) administrative processes and procedures including budgeting, human resources management, purchasing, contract management, and related record keeping and reporting; (7) effective methods and techniques of instruction; (8) natural resource management; (9) first aid; (10) outdoor and water safety; and (11) Commission organization, policies and procedures*.Skill in operation of: (1) audio-visual equipment; and (2) computer.Ability to: (1) plan, organize and direct the programs, services and operations of a nature facility; (2) supervise staff engaged in professional naturalist, technical support and office administrative functions; (3) perform effectively administrative work including budgeting, contract management, human resource management, and purchasing; (4) develop and maintain relationships with the community and with organizations concerned with environmental, natural, cultural and wildlife matters; (5) provide expert knowledge of a subject matter or area in the development of interpretative programs; (6) provide technical resource and program leadership to environmental, nature and wildlife groups within the community; (7) provide expertise in a subject matter or naturalist area to other governmental entities; (8) plan, develop, lead and present programs of large and extensive scope; (9) coordinate effectively other entities, staffs and units within the Commission and the community in planning and carrying out programs, events and activities; (10) communicate effectively with the staff and the public; Ability to: (11) write clearly, effectively, and concisely; (12) interpret technical natural and cultural history materials to lay persons; (13) speak clearly and effectively to large groups; (14) provide courteous service; (15) organize work efficiently; (16) develop program promotional advertising material.*Developed primarily after employment in this job class.Preferred Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in animal or agricultural science or related field; and four years of progressively responsible farm experienceSolid understanding of animal husbandry/ standard methodologiesFarm management experience (including staffing, animal care, agriculture, and programming) Minimum Qualifications 1. Bachelor's degree in natural, life, physical science, or related field; and four years of progressively responsible park naturalist experience; or2. An equivalent combination of education and experience. Supplemental Information Work ConditionsWorks indoors and outdoors. Works occasional weekends, evenings and holidays. Exposed occasionally to inclement weather and outdoor hazards. Moderate pressure to meet deadlines.
