The Human Rights Campaign is seeking a strategic, innovative, and dynamic Senior Vice President (SVP) of Communications to provide vision, leadership and direction for the Human Rights Campaign's communications. The SVP helps design, shape and execute a comprehensive, multi-faceted communications program building on and growing the position of HRC and the HRC Foundation as the leading LGBTQ+ civil rights organization. The SVP will help to shape, define and describe the future direction of HRC and how best to communicate it to a diverse cross section of audiences. The SVP will spearhead efforts to weave together organization-wide communications around public policy efforts, electoral campaigns, public research and educational programs. The SVP will manage HRC communications activities and is responsible for winning the news day, generating strong positive press coverage, amplifying the HRC brand, and overseeing the quality and consistency of messaging from a communications perspective. The SVP will help frame issues for press and messaging for HRC stakeholders and engage the public through earned and paid media; lead efforts to reach new and diverse audiences; and advance the issues of LGBTQ+ equality in the public dialogue. The SVP will work to ensure that the overarching communication and branding themes are well coordinated cross organizationally, collaborating with the SVP Marketing who leads brand management, creative and design services, publications, and digital engagement; as well as the SVP of Membership and Development, who leads online fundraising and advocacy. Reporting to Joni Madison, Chief of Staff and Interim President, the SVP will oversee a Communications team of approximately 15 individuals. The SVP will serve as a member of the Executive team, partnering with team members to uphold HRC's mission, deliver impactful programs and lead in a manner that is consistent with HRC's values. The specific responsibilities of the SVP of Communications include, but are not limited to: Create and implement forward-thinking, organization-wide communications and messaging to promote HRC's work to diverse audiences, including advocacy, policy and electoral campaigns and educational programs. Manage all HRC communications activities, including issues management, press & media relations, crisis communications, as well as internal communications for staff and volunteers. Generate strong, positive press coverage and oversee the quality and consistency of message. Provide on-going messaging for key stakeholders to excel in their HRC roles, including HRC staff, volunteers, donors, steering committee members, Board of Governors and Board of Directors. Develop and execute high-impact, creative ideas designed to guide long-term positioning and messaging. Collaborate with the executive and senior management team to create and drive a plan for public and media engagement of the HRC President, including speech writing and social for the President and other senior staff. Partner with the development team to maximize revenue and grow membership. Manage crisis communications and response. Work to heighten the organization's visibility and ensure consistent messaging with the national press, media and general public. Lead a talented and multi-faceted team of 15+ professionals. Demonstrated track record of success creating and implementing communications strategies for a large, complex organization. Significant electoral, legislative and crisis communications experience. Excellent writing skills with the ability to excel under pressure and tight timelines. Experience developing and rolling out public education campaigns - in multiple platforms including print, broadcast, and via the Web. Experience helping to shape and understand results of professional research and polling and translate them to public education campaigns. Superb interpersonal skills, with an impressive history of forging strong and positive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders. Outstanding public speaking skills, with experience serving as the representative for an organization to the public, particularly in public speaking engagements and with the media. Willingness to take risks and innovate in order to reach new audiences and assure HRC's communications are on the cutting edge. Ability to lead, model, and embed, equity, diversity and inclusion principles within their team and across the organization. Experience serving as a member of senior leadership teams, working in close partnership with advocacy, marketing, and fundraising leaders. Significant management experience and a track record for managing and developing high performing teams. Strong emotional intelligence. Commitment to HRC's values including respect, equity and intersectionality, community, and teamwork. Strong passion and commitment to LGBTQ+ equality and knowledge of LGBTQ+ issues. Degree in journalism or public relations preferred. Compensation & Benefits Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, starting in the low $200K range. All positions at the Human Rights Campaign and/or the Human Rights Campaign Foundation may require travel on a regular basis or periodically. Where the need arises for business travel, appropriate compensation as outlined by the Fair Labor Standards Act will apply.
