Job Description

The Washington Post is recruiting a Design & Art Director to build and lead the creative team that will design all consumer marketing. This group of visual designers and creative technologists will produce a cohesive design strategy, working closely with partners across the organization including Product, Subscriber Acquisition and News. The design director will guide and inspire her/his team to create compelling visual approaches and effective design experiences for every consumer marketing touchpoint.

This role will be a mixture of management and hands-on work, driving all aspects of design from concept through delivery. The ideal candidate is highly collaborative, entrepreneurial and invested in mentorship. Under your leadership, the design group will innovate and optimize techniques that lead the design field -- not just the news industry.

  • Produce engaging material to promote The Washington Post brand, its people and products by directing the visuals for consumer marketing campaigns.
  • Imbue all work with an iconic and consistent look and feel by collaborating with designers across Product and the Newsroom to establish a unified style guide and brand templates for all consumer marketing material.
  • Develop effective creative by partnering with the analytics team to test design elements and draw insights from captured data.
  • Align design with subscription goals and KPIs by closely collaborating with the subscriptions team.
  • Produce meaningful marketing campaigns around key product launches and special reports by partnering with the newsroom, news products, and our WPLive team.
  • Manage stakeholder relationships and designers, across multiple projects, with a clear voice and creative precision.
  • Manage direct reports' performance and career development by actively participating in goal setting and mentoring through growth opportunities.
  • Grow and lead a high performing team of creative designers and technologists by recruiting and developing talent.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design or design equivalent
  • 10+ years' experience in digital design with management experience
  • Agility in digital design systems (Figma/Sketch; Adobe Premiere, Photoshop and Illustrator)
  • Strong knowledge of UX/UI
  • Diverse experience designing for various formats (display, animation, video), channels (email, paid social etc) and audiences (from brand awareness to direct response)
  • An exceptional portfolio of design work for major global brand(s)
  • Experience at a top advertising, marketing or design agency preferred
