Position Information
Arlington Central Library is seeking a full-time Library Associate for The Shop, Arlington Library's makerspace. This position offers the opportunity to make a major contribution to library programming with an emphasis on maker and technology programming for children, teen and adult audiences. The employee will assist customers and perform a variety of tasks to ensure the successful operation of a public library with a diverse population, including people with limited English skills.

Specific duties include:

  • Supervising patrons within the lab/shop environment and maintaining their safety, and being available to answer questions;
  • Performing basic maintenance and troubleshooting tasks on computers and equipment, and operating maker equipment including, but not limited to, 3D printers, laser cutters, and sewing machines;
  • Working with a team to deliver Maker programming;
  • Serving on programming, service development, technology, and/or outreach committees or teams.
  • Providing customer service assistance to patrons in general reference, readers' advisory, and circulation in person at a service desk, by telephone, email, and other virtual environments
The ideal candidate will be creative, energetic, possess strong collaboration and communication skills, and be knowledgeable about current and emerging trends in technology and Makerspaces in public libraries.

Selection Criteria
Minimum:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Library Science, Education, Instructional Engineering, Instructional Design, Instructional or Educational Technology, or related.
  • One year of experience in educational programming, instructional design, or library operations or procedures.
Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference may given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Utilizing technology and delivering Maker services in a library setting;
  • Providing customer service to a diverse population, especially in the area of technology;
  • Operational knowledge of Maker equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and sewing machines;
  • Experience with audiovisual digitization equipment and audiovisual materials handling; or
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud
